## Question

What is the importance of RS 232-C in serial communication? Explain the RS 232-C working principle with its different types of signals.

## Short answer

RS-232C is a universal standard for serial DTE-DCE communication, ensuring interoperability with simple, low-cost wiring. It uses asynchronous start-stop framing, line drivers convert TTL to ±3V to ±15V levels (mark -3V to -15V, space +3V to +15V). Key signals: TXD, RXD (data), RTS/CTS (hardware handshake), DTR/DSR, DCD, GND.

## Answer

#### Importance of RS-232C
RS-232C (EIA standard) is the standard serial interface between DTE (computer, terminal) and DCE (modem). Its importance:
- Universal, simple and low cost interface for connecting PCs to modems, printers, instruments and microcontrollers.
- Defines electrical levels, mechanical connectors (DB-25/DB-9), signal functions and timing, so equipment from different makers works together.
- Needs only few wires (TXD, RXD, GND) and supports asynchronous and synchronous data with hardware handshaking.

#### Working principle
Data is sent bit by bit (asynchronous, start-stop framing, LSB first). A UART converts parallel bytes into a serial frame (start bit 0, data bits, optional parity, stop bit(s) 1). Line drivers (MC1488 / MAX232) convert TTL to RS-232 levels: **logic 1 (mark) = -3 V to -15 V, logic 0 (space) = +3 V to +15 V**; the region between -3 V and +3 V is undefined. Receivers (MC1489) convert back. Maximum 20 kbps and about 15 m.

#### Signals
| Signal | DB-25 pin | DB-9 pin | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| TXD | 2 | 3 | Transmitted data |
| RXD | 3 | 2 | Received data |
| RTS | 4 | 7 | Request to send |
| CTS | 5 | 8 | Clear to send |
| DSR | 6 | 6 | Data set ready |
| GND | 7 | 5 | Signal ground |
| DCD | 8 | 1 | Data carrier detect |
| DTR | 20 | 4 | Data terminal ready |
| RI | 22 | 9 | Ring indicator |
Handshake: DTR/DSR show that both devices are on-line; RTS/CTS control the flow of data.
