## Question

'In satellite communication the uplink frequency and downlink frequency are different.' Why?

## Short answer

Uplink and downlink use different frequencies to prevent the high‑power transmitter from interfering with the weak received signal, to simplify frequency‑translation filtering, and because the lower downlink frequency reduces path loss, suiting the satellite's limited power.

## Answer

The uplink (earth to satellite) and the downlink (satellite to earth) use different frequencies, with the uplink higher (for example 6 GHz up and 4 GHz down). There are three main reasons.

1. **Avoiding interference and feedback.** The transponder's high-power transmitted signal is many orders of magnitude stronger than the weak signal it receives. If both used the same frequency, the transmitter would leak into the receiver, causing feedback and oscillation.
2. **Easy filtering.** With two separate bands, the transponder can translate the frequency and amplify the signal, and filters can keep the two bands apart.
3. **Lower power on the satellite.** The lower downlink frequency suffers less path loss, which suits the satellite's limited power. The earth station can afford the higher uplink frequency because it has plenty of power.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why do the uplink and downlink use different frequencies?
   A. To increase the delay
   B. Because the dish is rotated
   C. The strong transmitted signal would interfere with the weak received signal, causing feedback
   D. To lower the orbit
Answer: C. Transmit power is billions of times the received power, so the bands must be separated. (Key point: Frequency difference)

2. Which is higher and why?
   A. Downlink; it needs more power
   B. They are equal
   C. Uplink; it reduces the earth station power only
   D. Uplink; a lower downlink frequency suffers less path loss and suits limited satellite power
Answer: D. Typical example is 6 GHz up and 4 GHz down. (Key point: Uplink higher)

3. What does the different frequency allow the transponder to do?
   A. Translate and amplify with filters separating the two bands
   B. Store the signal
   C. Avoid the use of an antenna
   D. Convert it to light
Answer: A. Filters separate the bands. (Key point: Translation)
