## Question

State the importance of normal distribution in engineering field with an example.

## Short answer

Normal distribution models natural variations in dimensions, strength, noise; fundamental for quality control, reliability, and CLT. Example: shaft diameters with μ=50 mm, σ=0.2 mm; acceptance range 49.6–50.4 mm has probability P(−2<Z<2)=0.9545.

## Answer

The normal distribution is the most widely used distribution in engineering because many measured quantities have a symmetric bell-shaped variation around an average value.

#### Importance
1. **Natural variation:** dimensions, weights, resistance, voltage, strength of materials and measurement errors generally follow the normal curve.
2. **Quality control:** control charts and tolerance limits (μ ± 3σ) are based on it. It tells what percentage of items will be defective.
3. **Central limit theorem:** averages of large samples are approximately normal whatever the population, so tests and confidence intervals use it.
4. **Approximation:** the Binomial and Poisson distributions are approximated by it for large n or λ.
5. **Signals and noise:** random noise in communication channels is modelled as Gaussian noise.
6. **Reliability and design:** to decide specifications, safety margins, and the number of spares.

#### Example
The diameter of shafts produced by a machine is normal with mean 50 mm and standard deviation 0.2 mm. Shafts between 49.6 mm and 50.4 mm are accepted.

z = (49.6 − 50)/0.2 = −2 and z = (50.4 − 50)/0.2 = +2

P(accepted) = P(−2 < Z < 2) = 2 × 0.4772 = 0.9545

So about 95.45% of shafts are accepted and about 4.55% are rejected, which helps the engineer judge whether the machine setting is good enough.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why does the normal distribution fit many engineering quantities?
   A. They vary symmetrically around an average in a bell shape
   B. They are all discrete
   C. They are always exponential
   D. They never vary
Answer: A. Dimensions, resistance, strength and errors typically show symmetric bell-shaped variation. (Key point: Why normal is common)

2. Shaft diameter N(50, 0.2); accepted range 49.6 to 50.4. The z-values are:
   A. −2 and +2
   B. −0.4 and +0.4
   C. −1 and +1
   D. −4 and +4
   Answer: A. z = ±0.4/0.2 = ±2. (Key point: Shaft example z-values)

3. The fraction of shafts accepted is:
   A. 68.27%
   B. 95.45%
   C. 99.73%
   D. 4.55%
   Answer: B. P(−2 < Z < 2) = 2 × 0.4772 = 0.9545, so about 4.55% are rejected. (Key point: Shaft acceptance)

4. How does the central limit theorem make the normal distribution important?
   A. Large-sample averages are approximately normal whatever the population
   B. It makes every population normal
   C. It applies only to normal populations
   D. It replaces the need for samples
Answer: A. Sample means of large samples are approximately normal, which underlies tests and confidence intervals. (Key point: Central limit theorem role)
