## Question

Define standard normal distribution. Write down its importance in engineering field.

## Short answer

Standard normal distribution has mean 0 and SD 1, pdf f(z)=(1/√(2π))e^(−z²/2). In engineering, it provides a single probability table after standardisation and is used for quality control, reliability analysis, error modeling, and statistical inference.

## Answer

**Standard normal distribution:** a normal distribution with mean 0 and standard deviation 1. The variable is denoted *Z* and its pdf is

f(z) = (1/√(2π)) · e^(−z²/2), −∞ < z < ∞

Any normal variable X ~ N(μ, σ²) is converted to Z by the standardisation z = (x − μ)/σ. The curve is symmetric about z = 0 and the total area is 1.

#### Importance in engineering
1. **One table for all problems:** probabilities of every normal variable are read from a single standard normal table after standardising.
2. **Quality control:** the variation in dimensions, resistance, capacitance, or strength of manufactured items is modelled as normal; z-values give the percentage of items inside or outside tolerance limits (control charts use ±3σ limits).
3. **Reliability and life testing:** probability that a component's life exceeds a given time.
4. **Errors and noise:** measurement errors, and noise in communication and electronic systems, are commonly assumed normal.
5. **Approximation and inference:** the Binomial and Poisson distributions and sampling distributions of means (central limit theorem) are approximated by the normal, and z-tests and confidence intervals are based on it.
6. **Comparing different scales:** z-scores allow values measured in different units to be compared.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. The standard normal variable Z has:
   A. mean 1 and standard deviation 0
   B. mean 0 and standard deviation 1
   C. mean 0 and variance 0
   D. mean 1 and variance 1
Answer: B. Standard normal is N(0, 1). (Key point: Definition)

2. A normal X ~ N(μ, σ^2) is converted to Z using:
   A. z = (x − μ)/σ
   B. z = (x − σ)/μ
   C. z = x/σ
   D. z = (x − μ)/σ^2
Answer: A. Subtracting the mean and dividing by σ gives z, so one table serves all normal problems. (Key point: Standardisation)

3. Why is the normal distribution useful in engineering quality control?
   A. It gives the percentage of items inside or outside tolerance limits
   B. It makes all items identical
   C. It only applies to discrete counts
   D. It removes measurement errors
Answer: A. Dimensions and strengths vary normally, so z-values show the proportion within tolerances; control charts use ±3σ. (Key point: Importance in quality control)
