## Question

A typist made 2.6 mistakes per page on average, find the probability that the page typed by him, i) there is no mistake ii) at least two mistakes iii) at most 3 mistakes.

## Short answer

Using Poisson distribution with mean 2.6, probability of no mistake is 0.0743, at least two mistakes is 0.7326, and at most three mistakes is 0.7360.

## Answer

Mistakes per page are rare, independent events over a page, so X ~ **Poisson** with mean λ = 2.6:

P(X = x) = e⁻²·⁶ (2.6)ˣ / x!, with e⁻²·⁶ = 0.074274.

```text
x   P(X = x)
0   0.074274
1   0.074274 × 2.6        = 0.193111
2   0.193111 × 2.6/2      = 0.251045
3   0.251045 × 2.6/3      = 0.217572
```

#### i) No mistake
P(X = 0) = **0.0743**

#### ii) At least two mistakes
P(X ≥ 2) = 1 − P(0) − P(1) = 1 − 0.0743 − 0.1931 = **0.7326**

#### iii) At most three mistakes
P(X ≤ 3) = 0.0743 + 0.1931 + 0.2510 + 0.2176 = **0.7360**

**Answer: (i) 0.0743, (ii) 0.7326, (iii) 0.7360**

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why Poisson?
   A. Mistakes per page are random events with a mean rate lambda = 2.6
   B. Waiting for r successes
   C. Fixed number of trials
   D. Finite lot
   Answer: A. Counts of rare random events per unit. (Key point: Poisson)

2. P(X=0)?
   A. 0.1931
   B. 2.6
   C. 0.0743
   D. 0.2510
   Answer: C. e^-2.6 = 0.0743. (Key point: No mistake)

3. How is P(X>=2) found?
   A. 1 - P(0) - P(1) = 0.7326
   B. P(2) only
   C. P(0)+P(1)
   D. 1 - P(2)
   Answer: A. 1 - 0.0743 - 0.1931. (Key point: At least two)

4. P(X<=3)?
   A. 0.2176
   B. 0.7326
   C. 0.5
   D. 0.7360
   Answer: D. Sum of P(0) to P(3) = 0.7360. (Key point: At most three)
