## Question

Write a short note on feasibility study.

## Short answer

A feasibility study is a preliminary study that recommends whether to go ahead, modify, or stop a project. It answers whether the system contributes to objectives, can be built with current technology, and fits budget and schedule. Types are technical, economic, legal, operational, and schedule.

## Answer

A **feasibility study** is a short preliminary study, carried out at the start of requirements engineering, to decide whether a proposed system is **worth developing**. Its result, the **feasibility report**, recommends whether to go ahead, modify the proposal or stop.

It answers questions such as (Sommerville):
- Does the system contribute to the overall objectives of the organisation?
- Can it be built with current technology, within budget and schedule?
- Can it be integrated with the other systems already in use?

**Types of feasibility (TELOS):**
| Type | Key question |
|---|---|
| Technical | Can it be built with available technology and skills? |
| Economic | Do benefits exceed costs (payback, ROI)? |
| Legal | Does it conflict with laws, licences, privacy? |
| Operational | Will users accept it; does it fit work processes? |
| Schedule | Can it be finished in the required time? |

**Process:** gather information from managers, users and technical staff; study the current system; identify alternative solutions; evaluate each for feasibility; write the report with a recommendation.

A good feasibility study prevents money being wasted on projects that cannot succeed and identifies key risks early.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What does the feasibility report recommend?
   A. Which programming language to use
   B. Whether to go ahead, modify the proposal or stop
   C. Which test cases to write
   D. Which users to train
Answer: B. The report is the outcome of the study and guides the decision on the proposed system. (Key point: Feasibility report)

2. Which type of feasibility checks whether users will accept it and it fits work processes?
   A. Technical
   B. Economic
   C. Legal
   D. Operational
Answer: D. Operational feasibility concerns acceptance and fit with processes. (Key point: Economic vs operational)

3. Which is part of the feasibility study process?
   A. Writing the final code
   B. Gathering information, studying the current system, identifying alternatives, evaluating them and writing the report
   C. Deploying the system
   D. Skipping alternatives
Answer: B. The study gathers information, studies the current system, evaluates alternatives and recommends in a report. (Key point: Process steps)
