## Question

With a neat sketch, discuss the grid iron system of water distribution including its advantages and disadvantages.

## Short answer

The grid iron system interconnects mains and branches in loops, eliminating dead ends. It provides reliable supply, uniform pressure, and good firefighting flow, but requires complex design and higher cost, and is unsuitable for irregularly grown towns.

## Answer

The grid iron (reticulation) system is a layout in which the mains, sub-mains and branches are interconnected in a rectangular grid, so that every pipe is fed from at least two directions and there are no dead ends.

```text
  Main (from reservoir)
   ||====+======+======+=====
   ||    |      |      |
   ||====+======+======+=====   sub-mains
   ||    |      |      |
   ||====+======+======+=====   branches
   Valves at every junction
```

#### Description
- The main runs along the principal road, sub-mains branch off it at right angles, and branches connect the sub-mains. Pipes meet at junctions to form loops.
- Suitable for well planned, regularly laid out towns with a rectangular road pattern.
- Design is done by loop methods such as Hardy-Cross because flow can reach a point by more than one path.

#### Advantages
1. Water reaches any point from two or more sides, so there is no stagnation and quality is good.
2. If one pipe is closed for repair, the rest of the area still gets water (only a short section is cut off by sectional valves).
3. Pressure is more uniform and losses are lower, because the flow divides between several paths.
4. Good discharge for firefighting from several directions.
5. Easy to extend the network.

#### Disadvantages
1. Design is difficult and needs trial-and-error methods (Hardy-Cross) or software.
2. More pipe length and many valves are needed, so the cost is high.
3. Many cross-connections, so it is hard to find the leaks and the burst section.
4. Not suited to irregular, haphazardly grown towns.
5. Needs skilled laying and maintenance.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What characterises the grid iron system?
   A. Branches end in dead ends
   B. Mains, sub-mains and branches are interconnected so each pipe is fed from at least two directions
   C. One central reservoir feeds radial pipes
   D. Pipes run in a single line
   Answer: B. Interconnected rectangular grid with loops and no dead ends. (Key point: Definition)

2. Why are loop methods like Hardy-Cross needed?
   A. Flow can reach a point by more than one path
   B. Pipes are all the same size
   C. The system has no valves
   D. Demand is zero
   Answer: A. Because flow splits among paths, discharges are found by trial and error. (Key point: Design method)

3. Which is an advantage of grid iron?
   A. Cheapest layout
   B. Supply continues to most of the area when one pipe is closed for repair
   C. Easy leak location
   D. Suited to haphazard towns
   Answer: B. Only a short section is cut off by sectional valves, and there is no stagnation. (Key point: Advantage)

4. Which is a disadvantage of grid iron?
   A. Dead end stagnation
   B. High cost due to more pipe length and many valves
   C. Low firefighting flow
   D. Low pressure at ends
   Answer: B. More pipe and valves make it costly, and design is difficult. (Key point: Disadvantage)
