## Question

Why are pipe joints required? Describe the expansion joint with a neat sketch (how does it work?).

## Short answer

Joints connect pipes and allow for thermal expansion. An expansion joint uses a spigot sliding inside a stuffing box with packing compressed by a gland, allowing the pipe to lengthen or shorten while staying watertight.

## Answer

#### Why joints are required
1. Pipes are made in limited lengths (3–6 m), so they must be joined to form a long line.
2. To connect pipes with fittings, valves, pumps and meters, and to change direction or diameter.
3. To keep the line watertight, allow small movements, and permit repair and replacement.

#### Expansion joint
An expansion joint lets a pipeline lengthen or shorten with temperature changes without damaging the pipe or leaking. It is used on long, straight, exposed pipelines (such as on bridges) and near valves and pumps.

```text
  pipe ==[ socket | packing | gland ]== pipe
                      ^ bolts
         spigot free to slide in the socket
```
#### Working
- One pipe has a plain spigot end; the next has a special socket (stuffing box) containing a rubber or lead packing.
- A gland ring pressed by bolts compresses the packing around the spigot, so the joint is watertight.
- When the temperature rises, the pipe expands and the spigot slides further into the socket; when it falls, it slides out. The packing stays tight in both cases, so the pipe is free from temperature stress.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the purpose of an expansion joint?
   A. To join different pipe materials
   B. To lengthen or shorten with temperature changes without damage or leaking
   C. To stop flow
   D. To raise pressure
   Answer: B. It lets the line change length with temperature, avoiding temperature stress. (Key point: Purpose)

2. How does the joint remain watertight while moving?
   A. The spigot is welded
   B. The pipe is bent
   C. A gland pressed by bolts compresses packing around the spigot in the stuffing box
   D. A valve closes
   Answer: C. Rubber or lead packing compressed by a gland keeps the joint tight as the spigot slides. (Key point: Construction)

3. When temperature rises, what happens?
   A. The spigot slides further into the socket
   B. The spigot slides out
   C. The packing is removed
   D. The pipe cracks
   Answer: A. The expanding pipe pushes the spigot deeper into the socket; on cooling it slides out. (Key point: Working)

4. Where is it used?
   A. Buried short pipes
   B. Inside tanks
   C. Long exposed straight pipes, bridges, near valves and pumps
   D. Only at the source
   Answer: C. It suits long exposed straight lines, bridges and places near valves and pumps. (Key point: Where used)
