## Question

Write down the requirements of good pipe material. Describe briefly polyethylene (PE), Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and Polypropylene random copolymer (PPR) pipes.

## Short answer

Good pipe material must be strong, durable, smooth inside, safe for water, have easy watertight joints, be light, low cost, and easy to repair. PE is flexible, joined by fusion, C=140, ideal for hilly ground. PVC is rigid, cheap, smooth (C=150), joined by solvent or rubber ring; brittle. PPR is heat-fusion welded, handles 95°C hot water, non-toxic.

## Answer

#### Requirements of a good pipe material
1. **Strength:** withstands internal pressure, water hammer and external loads (soil, traffic).
2. **Durability:** long life, resistant to corrosion, chemical attack from soil and water, and to abrasion.
3. **Smooth interior:** high Hazen-Williams C value, low friction loss, and no growth of deposits.
4. **Safe for water:** no taste, colour, toxic or bacterial effect on the water carried.
5. **Easy joints:** watertight, flexible and quick to make.
6. **Light and easy to handle** and transport; available in many sizes and lengths.
7. **Low cost,** including laying and maintenance, and locally available.
8. **Easy to repair,** to tap for connections, and to extend later.

#### Polyethylene (PE / HDPE) pipe
- A flexible thermoplastic pipe in coils or lengths, joined by butt fusion, electrofusion or compression fittings.
- Light, corrosion-free, smooth (C = 140), flexible (suits hilly and uneven ground, earthquake movement) and has a long life (50 years).
- Pressure classes PN 6, 10, 16. Used widely in rural schemes of Nepal. Weak against UV when exposed unless it is black-stabilised.

#### Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe
- A rigid plastic pipe, 6 m lengths, joined by solvent cement or rubber ring joints.
- Light, cheap, corrosion-free, smooth interior, and easy to install; used for distribution and house connections.
- Brittle with age and sunlight, low impact strength, and it softens with heat; not for hot water.

#### Polypropylene random copolymer (PPR) pipe
- A thermoplastic pipe joined by heat fusion (socket fusion), which gives a leak-proof joint.
- Suited for hot and cold water inside buildings; withstands up to 95 °C; non-toxic and long life.
- Costly, needs fusion tools and expands with temperature.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is PE/HDPE widely used in rural schemes of Nepal?
   A. It is brittle
   B. It is flexible, light, corrosion-free and suits hilly ground
   C. It needs no joints
   D. It handles 95 C hot water
Answer: B. HDPE is flexible and light with C about 140, suiting hilly ground. (Key point: PE pipe)

2. PVC pipes are joined by:
   A. Butt fusion only
   B. Lead and yarn
   C. Solvent cement or rubber ring joints
   D. Welding
Answer: C. Rigid PVC is joined by solvent cement or rubber ring joints. (Key point: PVC joint)

3. Which is a drawback of PVC?
   A. It corrodes
   B. Brittle with age and sunlight, low impact strength, softens with heat
   C. It is heavy
   D. It is very costly
Answer: B. PVC gets brittle with age and UV and softens with heat. (Key point: PVC weakness)

4. PPR pipe is best for:
   A. Large water mains
   B. Hot and cold water in buildings, joined by heat fusion, up to 95 C
   C. Sewers
   D. Buried bridges
Answer: B. PPR suits hot and cold water inside buildings; socket fusion gives a leak-proof joint. (Key point: PPR)
