## Question

Explain the advantages of PVC pipe over other pipes.

## Short answer

PVC pipes are light, corrosion-free, and have a smooth bore (C~150) reducing friction. They are low-cost, easy to join by solvent or rubber ring, durable (50 years), non-toxic, and provide good electrical insulation.

## Answer

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipes have the following advantages over other pipes.

1. **Light weight:** easy to transport, handle and lay, especially in hills; low labour cost.
2. **Corrosion free:** do not rust or get attacked by soil or water chemicals, unlike GI and CI.
3. **Smooth interior:** high Hazen-Williams C (about 150), so friction loss is less and the size can be smaller; no scale or tuberculation.
4. **Low cost** and quick to join, by solvent cement or rubber ring.
5. **Long life** (50 years), non-toxic and does not affect the taste or quality of water.
6. **Good electrical insulation** and low thermal conductivity.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is PVC better than GI and CI in soil?
   A. It is heavier
   B. It conducts electricity
   C. It has a rough interior
   D. It does not rust or get attacked by soil/water chemicals
Answer: D. PVC is corrosion free. (Key point: Corrosion)

2. What does the high Hazen-Williams C (about 150) of PVC imply?
   A. Shorter life
   B. Heavier pipe
   C. Higher friction loss
   D. Less friction loss, so smaller size possible
Answer: D. High C means a smooth pipe with low head loss. (Key point: Smooth interior)

3. Why is light weight valuable, especially in hills?
   A. Higher pressure rating
   B. Better electrical conduction
   C. Easier threading
   D. Easier transport and laying, low labour cost
Answer: D. Light pipes are easy to carry and lay. (Key point: Handling)
