## Question

Define Artificial Intelligence (AI). Describe the importance and practical applications of AI.

## Short answer

AI is the study of intelligent agents that perceive environments and act to achieve goals. Importance: automates repetitive work, improves accuracy/speed, supports decisions with big data, provides 24/7 availability, solves hard search problems, enables personalization, assists people. Applications: healthcare (diagnosis, drug discovery), education (tutors, grading), finance (fraud detection), agriculture (crop monitoring), transport (self-driving), NLP (translation, assistants), computer vision (face recognition), robotics, games, security, e-commerce recommendations.

## Answer

**Artificial Intelligence (AI)** is the study and design of intelligent agents, that is, systems that perceive their environment and take actions that maximise their chance of achieving their goals. Russell and Norvig group the definitions into four views: systems that think like humans, act like humans, think rationally and act rationally.

#### Importance of AI
1. **Automation of repetitive work:** AI performs routine and dangerous tasks faster and without fatigue (factory robots, data entry).
2. **Accuracy and speed:** Machines process huge data and make fewer errors in tasks such as diagnosis, fraud detection and translation.
3. **Decision support:** AI finds patterns in big data that humans cannot see and recommends better decisions.
4. **24 x 7 availability:** Chatbots and monitoring systems work without breaks.
5. **Solving hard problems:** Planning, scheduling, route finding and game playing are search problems too large for manual solution.
6. **Personalisation:** Recommendations, adaptive learning and smart assistants adjust to each user.
7. **Helping people:** Assistive technology for the disabled, early warning for disasters and better access to health and education.

#### Practical applications
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Healthcare | Disease diagnosis from X-ray/MRI, drug discovery, expert systems like MYCIN |
| Education | Intelligent tutors, automatic grading, language learning apps |
| Finance/Banking | Credit scoring, fraud detection, stock prediction, chatbots |
| Agriculture | Crop disease detection from images, yield prediction, smart irrigation |
| Transport | Self-driving cars, route planning (Google Maps), traffic control |
| Natural language | Machine translation, speech recognition, Siri/Alexa/Google Assistant |
| Computer vision | Face recognition, number-plate reading, medical imaging |
| Robotics | Industrial robots, drones, vacuum cleaners, rescue robots |
| Games | Chess (Deep Blue), Go (AlphaGo) |
| Security | Intrusion detection, spam filtering, surveillance |
| E-commerce/Media | Product and video recommendations |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. According to the answer, AI is the study and design of what?
   A. Databases that store knowledge
   B. Intelligent agents that perceive their environment and act to achieve goals
   C. Programs that only play games
   D. Hardware that replaces the CPU
Answer: B. AI is defined as the study of intelligent agents that perceive the environment and take actions to maximise their chance of achieving goals. (Key point: Definition of AI)

2. Which set lists Russell and Norvig's four views of AI?
   A. Learn, store, retrieve, delete
   B. Search, sort, compare, merge
   C. Think like humans, act like humans, think rationally, act rationally
   D. Sense, plan, move, repair
Answer: C. The four views are thinking humanly, acting humanly, thinking rationally and acting rationally. (Key point: Four views of AI)

3. Why is AI important for planning, scheduling and route finding?
   A. They need no data at all
   B. They can be solved by a single formula
   C. They are only needed in games
   D. They are search problems too large to solve manually
Answer: D. These are search problems too large for manual solution, so AI is used. (Key point: Importance: hard problems)

4. Which pairing of field and example is correct?
   A. Healthcare - disease diagnosis from X-ray/MRI
   B. Agriculture - number-plate reading
   C. Games - credit scoring
   D. Finance - crop disease detection
Answer: A. Healthcare uses AI for diagnosis from X-ray/MRI; the other pairings mix up fields. (Key point: Applications)
