## Question

Define AI. What is the importance of the Turing Test in AI? List applications of AI.

## Short answer

Artificial intelligence is the field of building machines to perform tasks requiring human intelligence. The Turing Test provides a practical, behaviour-based measure of intelligence and sets core research goals like natural language processing. Applications include expert systems, machine translation, computer vision, self-driving vehicles, fraud detection, and recommendation systems.

## Answer

#### Definition of AI
**Artificial Intelligence** is the field of computer science that builds machines and programs which can perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, problem solving, perception and language understanding.

#### Importance of the Turing Test in AI
Proposed by Alan Turing in 1950: a machine passes if a human interrogator, conversing by text, cannot tell it apart from a human.
1. **Operational definition of intelligence:** It replaces the vague question "Can machines think?" with a practical, behaviour-based test.
2. **Defines goals for AI research:** To pass, a system needs natural language processing, knowledge representation, automated reasoning and machine learning, the core areas of AI. (Total Turing Test: computer vision and robotics too.)
3. **Benchmark and competitions:** Chatbot contests such as the Loebner Prize use it, and CAPTCHA is a reverse Turing test.
4. **Philosophical debate:** It led to discussions such as Searle's Chinese Room on whether behaviour equals understanding.

#### Applications of AI
- Expert systems and medical diagnosis
- Natural language processing: machine translation, chatbots, speech recognition
- Computer vision: face recognition, object detection
- Robotics and self-driving vehicles
- Game playing (chess, Go)
- Fraud detection, credit scoring and stock prediction in finance
- Recommendation systems in e-commerce and media
- Smart agriculture, education (intelligent tutors) and security

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How does the Turing Test help define intelligence?
   A. It defines intelligence by processor speed
   B. It measures memory size
   C. It replaces 'Can machines think?' with a practical behaviour-based test
   D. It requires a robot body
Answer: C. It gives an operational, behaviour-based definition instead of a vague question. (Key point: Operational definition)

2. Which areas must a system master to pass the Turing Test?
   A. Networking, graphics, databases, compilers
   B. Only machine learning
   C. Robotics only
   D. NLP, knowledge representation, automated reasoning, machine learning
Answer: D. These are the core AI areas the test drives. (Key point: Research goals)

3. What is CAPTCHA, in relation to the Turing Test?
   A. A reverse Turing test
   B. A type of chatbot
   C. A neural network
   D. A search algorithm
Answer: A. In CAPTCHA a computer judges whether the user is human, so it is a reverse Turing test. (Key point: CAPTCHA)

4. Which debate did the Turing Test provoke?
   A. Whether LISP is better than Prolog
   B. Whether behaviour equals understanding (Searle's Chinese Room)
   C. Whether AI needs GPUs
   D. Whether chess is solved
Answer: B. It led to discussions like the Chinese Room about behaviour versus understanding. (Key point: Philosophical debate)
