## Question

What is an expert system? Explain its advantages and disadvantages.

## Short answer

An expert system stores domain expert knowledge as rules and facts and uses an inference engine for advice or decisions. Advantages include 24/7 availability, consistent answers, preservation of expertise, and explanation of reasoning. Disadvantages are high development cost, brittleness outside its domain, lack of common sense, and difficulty in knowledge extraction.

## Answer

An **expert system** is a computer program that stores the knowledge of human experts in a specific domain as facts and rules and uses an inference engine to give expert-level advice, diagnosis or decisions (e.g. MYCIN for medical diagnosis).

Main components: knowledge base, inference engine, working memory, user interface, explanation facility and knowledge acquisition facility.

#### Advantages
1. **Availability:** works 24 hours a day, anywhere it is installed.
2. **Preserves expertise:** keeps knowledge when experts retire or leave, and makes scarce expertise widely available.
3. **Consistency:** gives the same answer for the same case; no fatigue, emotion or bias.
4. **Speed:** gives answers faster than a human consultation.
5. **Lower cost:** reduces the cost of expert consultation after development.
6. **Explanation:** can explain its reasoning (How? Why?), which helps trust and training.
7. **Handles complex rules:** can combine large numbers of rules and facts without forgetting any.
8. **Works in hazardous places** where humans cannot go.
9. **Training aid** for novices.

#### Disadvantages
1. **High development cost and time**, especially knowledge acquisition (the bottleneck).
2. **No common sense or creativity:** works only in a narrow domain and fails outside it.
3. **Cannot learn automatically** from experience (most systems need manual updates).
4. **Brittle:** gives wrong or no answers for cases not covered by the rules.
5. **Hard to extract knowledge:** experts often cannot express their intuition as rules.
6. **Maintenance is hard** as rule bases grow; rules may conflict.
7. **Lack of human touch and responsibility:** legal and ethical issues if the advice is wrong.
8. **Depends on input quality:** needs reliable inputs; errors in the data give errors in the output.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is consistency an advantage of an expert system?
   A. It learns new rules by itself
   B. It works outside its domain
   C. It uses common sense
   D. It gives the same answer for the same case with no fatigue, emotion or bias
Answer: D. An expert system applies the same rules every time, unlike a human who may tire or be biased. (Key point: Consistency advantage)

2. How does an expert system preserve expertise?
   A. It keeps knowledge when experts retire or leave and makes it widely available
   B. It trains experts automatically
   C. It replaces the need for any knowledge base
   D. It deletes old rules
Answer: A. Expert knowledge stored as rules remains available after the expert leaves and can be used in many places. (Key point: Preserves expertise)

3. What does it mean that expert systems are brittle?
   A. They are physically fragile
   B. They give wrong or no answers for cases not covered by their rules
   C. They are slower than humans
   D. They forget rules over time
Answer: B. They work only in a narrow domain and fail outside the cases their rules cover. (Key point: Brittleness)

4. Which is a disadvantage related to learning and cost?
   A. They work in hazardous places
   B. They give faster answers
   C. Most cannot learn automatically from experience, and development (knowledge acquisition) is costly
   D. They offer explanation of reasoning
Answer: C. Rules usually need manual updating, and knowledge acquisition makes development costly and slow. (Key point: Learning limitation)
