## Question

Differentiate between forward chaining and backward chaining.

## Short answer

Forward chaining is data-driven, starting from facts and firing rules to reach a goal, possibly deriving irrelevant facts. Backward chaining is goal-driven, starting from the goal and working backward to find supporting facts; it is focused but may loop.

## Answer

Both are inference methods for rule-based systems with IF-THEN rules.

| Basis | Forward chaining | Backward chaining |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | From known facts towards the goal (bottom-up) | From the goal back to facts (top-down) |
| Approach | Data-driven: fires rules whose conditions are satisfied, adding new facts | Goal-driven: finds rules whose conclusion matches the goal and tries to prove their conditions as sub-goals |
| Start | Facts / initial data | Hypothesis / goal to prove |
| Strategy | Breadth-first like | Depth-first like |
| Efficiency | May derive many irrelevant facts | Focuses only on rules relevant to the goal |
| Best for | Monitoring, planning, design, interpretation (many conclusions from data) | Diagnosis, answering a specific query (few goals) |
| Example systems | OPS5, XCON | MYCIN, Prolog |
| Termination | Stops when no new facts or goal is derived | Stops when the goal is proved or no rules remain |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which statement is correct?
   A. Forward chaining is goal-driven; backward chaining is data-driven
   B. Forward chaining is data-driven (facts to goal); backward chaining is goal-driven (goal to facts)
   C. Both start from the goal
   D. Both start from facts
Answer: B. Forward chaining fires rules whose conditions are met by known facts; backward chaining works from the goal through sub-goals. (Key point: Direction)

2. Which chaining may derive many irrelevant facts?
   A. Backward chaining
   B. Forward chaining
   C. Neither
   D. Both equally never
Answer: B. Forward chaining adds every derivable fact, while backward chaining focuses only on rules relevant to the goal. (Key point: Efficiency)

3. Which pairing is correct?
   A. Forward: diagnosis (MYCIN); backward: monitoring (XCON)
   B. Forward: monitoring/planning (OPS5, XCON); backward: diagnosis/queries (MYCIN, Prolog)
   C. Both used only in Prolog
   D. Backward chaining is used only for planning
Answer: B. Forward chaining suits data-driven tasks; backward chaining suits answering specific queries such as diagnosis. (Key point: Applications)
