## Question

"Learning is an essential characteristic for intelligent agents." List down justification on this statement. Write about the role of learning with suitable example.

## Short answer

Learning is essential because agents face unknown or changing environments, need to handle complex tasks, and improve performance with experience. It enables autonomy and reduces designer effort by allowing the agent to adapt.

## Answer

A **learning agent** improves its performance over time through its experience. Russell & Norvig give it four parts: a **performance element** (chooses actions), a **critic** (feedback against a standard), a **learning element** (improves the performance element) and a **problem generator** (suggests exploratory actions).

#### Justification: why learning is essential
1. **Unknown or changing environments:** the designer cannot foresee every situation; a learning agent adapts to new ones.
2. **Handling complexity:** writing rules for all cases is impractical (e.g. recognising handwriting or speech); learning from examples is easier.
3. **Improving with experience:** performance gets better with time instead of staying fixed.
4. **Reducing designer effort:** the agent starts with little knowledge and acquires the rest, so less manual programming is needed.
5. **Autonomy:** a truly autonomous agent relies on its own percepts, not only on the built-in knowledge of its designer.
6. **Handling uncertainty and noise:** statistical learning gives robust decisions with incomplete data.
7. **Personalisation:** agents adapt to individual user preferences.

#### Role of learning
```text
  Environment --percepts--> [Performance element] --> actions
        |                          ^
        v                          | changes
     [Critic] --feedback--> [Learning element] <--> [Problem generator]
```
- Learning improves the **performance element**: rules, utility estimates, and models of the world.
- The critic tells the agent how well it did; the learning element modifies knowledge to do better.
- The problem generator encourages exploration to gain new useful experiences.

#### Example: taxi-driving agent
Initially the agent brakes late. When a passenger complains (critic), the learning element adjusts the rule "brake when an obstacle is within 5 m" to "within 10 m" for wet roads. Exploring a new route (problem generator) shows a shorter path, which is stored. Over time the agent drives more safely and faster without being reprogrammed.

Another example: a spam filter learns from user feedback to classify new e-mails better.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is learning essential for agents in unknown or changing environments?
   A. Because agents have no sensors
   B. Because learning removes the need for percepts
   C. Because rules always cover every case
   D. The designer cannot foresee every situation, so the agent must adapt
   Answer: D. Learning lets agents handle unforeseen situations. (Key point: Unknown environments)

2. What does autonomy mean for a learning agent?
   A. It relies on its own percepts, not only on the designer's built-in knowledge
   B. It ignores all percepts
   C. It depends fully on the designer's rules
   D. It never changes behaviour
   Answer: A. A truly autonomous agent learns from experience. (Key point: Autonomy)

3. What is the role of the problem generator?
   A. Judge performance against a standard
   B. Suggest exploratory actions that give new useful experiences
   C. Choose the final action
   D. Delete wrong knowledge
   Answer: B. The critic gives feedback; the generator drives exploration. (Key point: Problem generator)

4. In the taxi example, what changes after the passenger complains?
   A. The environment is replaced
   B. The critic is removed
   C. The learning element adjusts the braking rule (e.g. 5 m to 10 m on wet roads)
   D. The taxi stops using percepts
   Answer: C. The complaint is the critic's feedback; the learning element updates the rule. (Key point: Taxi example)
