## Question

What is machine vision? How does machine vision help in Artificial Intelligence?

## Short answer

Machine vision enables machines to acquire and understand images. It helps AI by providing perception for robots, enabling automation, recognition tasks, autonomous vehicles, medical diagnosis, and learning system input.

## Answer

**Machine (computer) vision** is the field of AI that enables machines to acquire, process, analyse and understand images and video from the real world and to produce symbolic information or decisions from them, much as human vision does.

#### Stages
```text
 Camera/sensor -> Image acquisition -> Pre-processing (noise removal)
   -> Segmentation (edges, regions) -> Feature extraction
   -> Object recognition -> Interpretation / action
```
1. Image acquisition (camera, scanner, sensors).
2. Pre-processing: noise removal, contrast enhancement.
3. Segmentation: find edges, regions and objects.
4. Feature extraction: shape, colour, texture, corners.
5. Recognition and interpretation: classify objects and understand the scene.

#### How machine vision helps AI
- Gives intelligent agents and robots **perception** of their surroundings (sensing is the first step of an agent's action cycle).
- Enables **automation**: inspection of products in factories, sorting, assembly.
- Supports **recognition tasks**: face, fingerprint, handwriting (OCR) and number-plate recognition.
- Enables **autonomous vehicles and drones** to detect lanes, pedestrians and obstacles.
- Helps **medical diagnosis** from X-ray, CT and MRI images, and satellite image analysis.
- Provides input for learning systems (e.g. neural networks learn from images), and for surveillance and security.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is machine vision?
   A. Making machines produce images from text
   B. Improving the physical quality of cameras
   C. Enabling machines to acquire, process and understand images and video to produce decisions
   D. Storing large image databases
   Answer: C. Machine vision lets machines acquire, analyse and understand images and video and produce symbolic information or decisions. (Key point: Definition of machine vision)

2. Which is the correct order of machine vision stages?
   A. Segmentation, acquisition, pre-processing, recognition
   B. Acquisition, feature extraction, pre-processing, segmentation
   C. Pre-processing, acquisition, recognition, segmentation
   D. Acquisition, pre-processing, segmentation, feature extraction, recognition
   Answer: D. An image is first acquired, cleaned (noise removal), segmented into edges/regions, features are extracted, then objects are recognised. (Key point: Stages of machine vision)

3. How does machine vision mainly help an intelligent agent?
   A. It gives the agent perception of its surroundings, the first step of the action cycle
   B. It replaces the agent's reasoning module
   C. It stores the agent's knowledge base
   D. It only helps in printing documents
   Answer: A. Vision provides sensing/perception, which lets agents and robots act in the real world, e.g. self-driving vehicles detecting lanes and pedestrians. (Key point: Role in AI: perception)
