## Question

What is artificial intelligence (AI)? Explain the Turing test and its importance in artificial intelligence.

## Short answer

AI is the branch of computer science building machines that perform tasks needing human intelligence like reasoning and learning. The Turing Test: a human interrogator texts with a hidden human and machine; if the interrogator cannot reliably distinguish them, the machine passes. It requires NLP, knowledge representation, reasoning, and learning. Importance: gave AI a measurable behavioral goal, drove core research areas, avoided philosophical debates, inspired chatbots and CAPTCHAs, and sparked the Chinese Room debate.

## Answer

**Artificial Intelligence (AI)** is the branch of computer science concerned with building machines and software that can perform tasks which need human intelligence, such as reasoning, learning, perceiving, understanding language and making decisions. In Russell and Norvig's view, AI is the study of agents that receive percepts from the environment and perform actions rationally.

#### Turing Test
Proposed by Alan Turing in 1950 ("Computing Machinery and Intelligence") as an operational test of machine intelligence, replacing the vague question "Can machines think?".

**Set-up:** A human interrogator (C) sits in one room and communicates only by text with two hidden players: a human (B) and a computer (A). The interrogator may ask any questions for a fixed time. If C cannot reliably tell the machine from the human, the computer *passes*. (Turing predicted that by about 2000 a machine would fool an average interrogator at least 30% of the time after five minutes of questioning.)

```text
 +---------+    text    +-----------+
 | Judge C |<---------->|  Human B  |
 |         |            +-----------+
 |         |    text    +-----------+
 |         |<---------->| Machine A |
 +---------+            +-----------+
```

**Abilities the machine needs:**
1. Natural language processing: to converse in English.
2. Knowledge representation: to store what it knows and hears.
3. Automated reasoning: to answer questions and draw conclusions.
4. Machine learning: to adapt and detect patterns.
(The *Total Turing Test* adds computer vision and robotics.)

#### Importance in AI
- It gave AI a clear, **measurable goal** and a practical definition of intelligence based on behaviour.
- It led to research in NLP, knowledge representation, reasoning and learning, the main areas of AI.
- It avoids philosophical arguments about what "thinking" means.
- It inspired chatbots and competitions like the Loebner Prize, and CAPTCHA (a reverse Turing test).
- It started the debate on machine understanding (e.g. Searle's Chinese Room), which shaped AI philosophy.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What question did Turing's test replace?
   A. Can machines calculate?
   B. Can machines store data?
   C. Can machines think?
   D. Can machines be built cheaply?
   Answer: C. It gave an operational test in place of the vague question 'Can machines think?'. (Key point: Purpose of Turing Test)

2. In the set-up, who communicates with the interrogator?
   A. Two machines
   B. Only a visible robot
   C. A group of judges face to face
   D. A hidden human and a hidden computer, by text only
   Answer: D. The interrogator talks by text to a hidden human and a hidden computer. (Key point: Test set-up)

3. Which set of abilities must a machine have to pass the standard test?
   A. NLP, knowledge representation, automated reasoning, machine learning
   B. Vision, robotics, speech synthesis, sorting
   C. Search, sorting, hashing, compression
   D. Robotics, vision, NLP, networking
   Answer: A. The four are NLP, knowledge representation, reasoning and learning; vision and robotics are added in the Total test. (Key point: Required abilities)

4. Which is an importance of the Turing Test?
   A. It proved machines are conscious
   B. It gave AI a clear, measurable behaviour-based goal
   C. It replaced all AI research
   D. It defines hardware standards
   Answer: B. It gave AI a measurable goal and avoided arguments over what 'thinking' means. (Key point: Importance)
