## Question

Explain different types of doors based on shutters with necessary sketches.

## Short answer

Door types by shutter: battened, ledged and braced, framed ledged and braced, panelled, glazed, flush, louvered, wire gauze, sheet steel, collapsible rolling shutter.

## Answer

A door shutter is the movable leaf that closes the opening. Based on the construction of the shutter, doors are:

| Type | Description and use |
|---|---|
| Battened (ledged) door | Vertical battens joined by horizontal ledges; cheapest; sheds, stores, godowns |
| Ledged and braced door | Diagonal braces added to prevent sagging; farm buildings, outhouses |
| Framed, ledged and braced door | Battens fixed in a frame of styles and rails, with braces; stronger |
| Panelled door | Styles, rails and panels of timber/plywood/glass; most common in houses and offices |
| Glazed door | Panels of glass in a framework; for light; shops, offices |
| Flush door | Flat on both sides, with plywood over a core (solid or hollow); modern houses |
| Louvered door | Slats (louvres) in the shutter; ventilation; bathrooms, stores |
| Wire gauze (mosquito) door | Wire mesh in a frame; ventilation and insect protection |
| Sheet / steel door | Metal sheet; fire resistant and strong; industrial buildings, godowns |
| Collapsible / rolling steel shutter | Steel strips or channels; shops, garages |

- **Battened door:** boards 100-150 mm wide and 20-40 mm thick, joined by 3 ledges 100-150 mm wide at the top, middle and bottom.
- **Ledged and braced door:** braces run diagonally between the ledges, rising from the hinge side towards the lock side.
- **Panelled door:** styles 100 x 40 mm, rails 100-200 x 40 mm, panels 15-20 mm thick.
- **Flush door:** plywood faces 3-6 mm thick glued on a frame with a solid or hollow core.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why are diagonal braces added to a ledged door?
   A. To allow ventilation
   B. To improve appearance
   C. To prevent sagging of the shutter
   D. To make the door fire resistant
Answer: C. Braces stop the leaf from sagging, so ledged and braced doors suit out-houses and farm buildings. (Key point: Ledged and braced door)

2. A flush door is best described as
   A. Vertical battens held by three ledges
   B. Slats inclined at 45 degrees in the shutter
   C. Wire mesh in a frame
   D. Flat on both sides with plywood over a solid or hollow core
Answer: D. A flush door has plywood faces over a frame with a solid or hollow core. (Key point: Flush door)

3. Which door suits bathrooms and stores needing ventilation?
   A. Louvered door
   B. Glazed door
   C. Steel sheet door
   D. Flush door
Answer: A. Louvered doors have slats that allow ventilation, suited to bathrooms and stores. (Key point: Matching door to use)
