## Question

What are the functions of door and window? Draw elevation of battened door and glazed window having wooden members.

## Short answer

Doors give entry/exit, privacy, security, control light/air/sound, protect against weather, allow furniture movement and fire escape. Windows admit daylight, fresh air, view, remove stale air, enhance appearance. Battened door elevation shows vertical tongued-and-grooved battens held by horizontal ledges on back within a frame. Glazed window elevation shows wooden frame with two hinged sashes each having stiles, rails, glazing bars holding glass panes with putty.

## Answer

#### Functions of doors and windows
**Door:**
- Gives entry and exit and connects rooms.
- Provides privacy and security.
- Controls light, air and sound, and protects against weather.
- Allows movement of furniture and goods, and escape in a fire.

**Window:**
- Admits daylight and fresh air (natural ventilation).
- Gives a view of the outside.
- Helps remove hot, stale air.
- Adds to the architectural appearance.

#### Elevation of a battened door
A battened door has vertical boards (battens, 100-150 mm wide, 20-30 mm thick), tongued and grooved, and held together by two or three horizontal **ledges** nailed or screwed on the back, with the frame around it.

```text
   +----------------------+  <- head
   ||||||||||||||||||||||||
   ||||||||||||||||||||||||
   |======================|  <- top ledge (on back)
   ||||||||||||||||||||||||
   ||||||||||||||||||||||||
   |======================|  <- middle ledge
   ||||||||||||||||||||||||
   |======================|  <- bottom ledge
   +----------------------+
   <- battens (vertical) ->
```

#### Elevation of a glazed window (wooden)
A wooden frame with two glazed sashes hinged to the posts. Each sash has stiles, a top rail, a bottom rail and glazing bars holding the glass panes with putty or beading.

```text
   +-------------------------+  <- head
   |+----------+ +----------+|
   ||  glass   | |  glass   ||
   ||----------| |----------||  <- glazing bar
   ||  glass   | |  glass   ||
   |+----------+ +----------+|
   +-------------------------+  <- sill (sloped)
    <- sash ->     <- sash ->
```

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How are battens of a battened door fixed together?
   A. By vertical stiles and panels
   B. By a hollow core
   C. By horizontal ledges nailed or screwed on the back
   D. By hinges between battens
   Answer: C. Vertical tongued-and-grooved battens are held by 2-3 ledges. (Key point: Ledges)

2. What is the width of a batten?
   A. 10-20 mm
   B. 300-400 mm
   C. 500 mm
   D. 100-150 mm
   Answer: D. Battens are 100-150 mm wide and 20-30 mm thick. (Key point: Batten width)

3. What do glazing bars do in a glazed window?
   A. Hold the glass panes in the sash with putty or beading
   B. Fix the frame to the wall
   C. Operate the sash
   D. Ventilate the room
   Answer: A. Glazing bars divide the sash and hold the panes. (Key point: Glazing bars)

4. Which is a function of a window, not necessarily of a door?
   A. Provide security from entry
   B. Admit daylight and natural ventilation
   C. Allow movement of furniture
   D. Allow escape in fire
   Answer: B. Daylight and ventilation are key window functions. (Key point: Window function)
