## Question

What are internal partitions? What are the requirements for a good partition? Explain the classification of partitions (with respect to materials and loading systems).

## Short answer

Internal partitions are thin non-load-bearing walls dividing floor space. A good partition should be light, strong, fire-resistant, sound-insulating, and easy to build. They are classified by material (brick, block, glass, timber, metal, gypsum) and by loading (load-bearing or non-load-bearing).

## Answer

#### Internal partitions
A **partition** is a thin wall that divides a floor space into rooms. It is usually non-load-bearing, carries only its own weight, and is built of brick, block, timber, glass, metal or a similar light material.

#### Requirements of a good partition
- Light in weight and thin, so that it takes up less floor space.
- Strong and stable enough to carry its own weight and resist normal impact.
- Fire resistant, with good sound insulation.
- Resistant to termites, damp and rot.
- Easy, quick and cheap to construct.
- Smooth and good-looking, and able to take plaster or paint.
- Allows pipes and wiring to be run through it.

#### Classification
**By material:**
- *Brick partitions:* plain, reinforced or brick nogging; about 10 cm thick.
- *Clay or concrete block partitions:* hollow blocks.
- *Glass partitions:* glass panes in wooden or aluminium frames.
- *Timber partitions:* studs with plywood or boards, framed or plain.
- *Metal partitions:* aluminium or steel sheets on a frame.
- *Plaster slab / gypsum board partitions.*
- *Asbestos / fibre cement and straw board partitions.*
- *RCC partitions.*

**By loading system:**
- *Load-bearing partitions:* carry the load of the floor above (act as walls).
- *Non-load-bearing partitions:* carry only their own weight.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is a partition?
   A. A retaining wall
   B. A thick load-bearing wall
   C. A thin non-load-bearing wall that divides floor space into rooms
   D. A foundation wall
Answer: C. A partition carries only its own weight. (Key point: Partition definition)

2. Which is a requirement of a good partition?
   A. Heavy and thick
   B. Expensive
   C. Load-bearing
   D. Light, thin, fire resistant and sound insulating
Answer: D. Good partitions are light, thin, stable, fire and damp proof, cheap and easy to build. (Key point: Requirements)

3. How are partitions classified by loading?
   A. Load-bearing and non-load-bearing
   B. Internal and external
   C. Fixed and sliding
   D. Brick and timber
Answer: A. Load-bearing partitions carry the floor above; non-load-bearing carry only their own weight. (Key point: Loading classification)

4. Which is a material-based type?
   A. Non-load-bearing partition
   B. Brick nogging partition
   C. Load-bearing partition
   D. Suspended partition
Answer: B. Brick nogging (bricks in timber frame) is a brick partition type. (Key point: Material classification)
