## Question

List out different types of shoring. Explain raking shore with necessary sketch.

## Short answer

The three types of shoring are raking, flying, and dead shores. Raking shore uses inclined rakers at 60-70° from a sole plate on ground to a wall plate with needles on the wall, secured by cleats and braces. It supports leaning or bulging external walls where open ground is available, with rakers spaced 3-4.5 m apart.

## Answer

#### Types of shoring
1. Raking (inclined) shore
2. Flying (horizontal) shore
3. Dead (vertical) shore

#### Raking shore
**Raking (inclined) shore:** inclined members (rakers) support a wall from the outside. Rakers are at 60-70 degrees to the ground and are fixed at the top to a **wall plate** (with needles) bolted to the wall, and at the bottom to a **sole plate** resting on a firm base. **Cleats** and **braces** hold the members together.

```text
        wall plate
   wall |==|\ needle
   |    |  | \ raker
   |    |  |  \ cleat
   |    |  |   \
   |    |  |    \
 --+----+--+-----\--- ground
                sole plate
```
Types: simple (single raker), compound/double (two or more rakers on different levels), and multiple raking shores for high walls (up to three storeys).

**Parts:** wall plate, needles, rakers, cleats, braces, sole plate and wedges.
**Use:** to support an external wall that is leaning, bulging or undergoing alteration, where open ground is available.
**Spacing:** rakers are placed at 3-4.5 m c/c along the wall.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Rakers are placed at:
   A. 0 degrees
   B. 10 degrees
   C. 90 degrees
   D. 60-70 degrees to the ground
   Answer: D. Inclined at 60-70 degrees. (Key point: Raker angle)

2. Rakers are spaced along the wall at:
   A. 20 m
   B. 0.1 m
   C. 3-4.5 m c/c
   D. None
   Answer: C. Rakers placed at 3-4.5 m centres. (Key point: Spacing)

3. Raking shore is used for:
   A. Floors
   B. Trenches
   C. Between two walls with no ground
   D. External wall that is leaning or bulging where open ground is available
   Answer: D. It needs open ground for the sole plate. (Key point: Use)
