## Question

Write a short note on partition walls: their types and functions.

## Short answer

Partition walls are thin vertical non-load-bearing dividers. Types include brick, concrete block, glass, timber, metal, gypsum, and fibre cement partitions. They divide space, provide privacy, sound and fire insulation, and conceal services.

## Answer

A **partition wall** is a thin vertical wall that divides the interior of a building into rooms or areas. In most cases it is non-load-bearing.

#### Types
- **Brick partitions:** plain, reinforced, nogged.
- **Clay or concrete block partitions.**
- **Glass partitions** (fixed or sliding).
- **Timber partitions:** plywood, framed.
- **Metal partitions:** aluminium or steel sheet.
- **Gypsum board and plaster slab partitions.**
- **Fibre cement / asbestos-free sheet partitions.**
- **RCC and precast panels.**

#### Functions
- Divides the floor space into rooms.
- Gives privacy and security.
- Provides sound insulation and fire resistance.
- Carries doors, windows and fixtures.
- Hides services such as pipes and wires.
- Can be shifted (movable partitions) to change the layout.
- Being thin, leaves more usable floor space.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. A partition wall is
   A. a structural column
   B. a floor slab
   C. a roof
   D. a thin vertical wall dividing the interior into rooms, mostly non-load-bearing
Answer: D. Partition walls divide interior space and usually carry only their own weight. (Key point: Definition)

2. Which is a function of partitions?
   A. Privacy, security, sound insulation and fire resistance
   B. Carrying roof load
   C. Foundation support
   D. Water supply
Answer: A. Partitions give privacy and some sound and fire separation. (Key point: Function: privacy)

3. What advantage do movable partitions give?
   A. They need no frame
   B. They can be shifted to change the layout
   C. They resist earthquake
   D. They carry floors
Answer: B. Movable partitions allow layout changes. (Key point: Movable)

4. Why do thin partitions help?
   A. They resist floods
   B. They need no door
   C. They provide more usable floor space
   D. They are load-bearing
Answer: C. Thin walls leave more floor area. (Key point: Space)
