## Question

Explain ASIP with its different forms (types).

## Short answer

An ASIP is a programmable processor optimized for a domain, balancing flexibility and speed. Forms include microcontrollers with on-chip memory and I/O, digital signal processors with MAC units and Harvard architecture, and domain-specific processors like network or graphics processors.

## Answer

An **Application-Specific Instruction-set Processor (ASIP)** is a programmable processor whose architecture and instruction set are optimised for a particular domain of applications. It is a compromise between the flexible GPP and the fast single-purpose processor (SPP).

#### Forms (types)
1. **Microcontroller:** a processor with CPU, memory (RAM/ROM), timers, I/O ports, serial ports and ADC on a single chip, tuned for control-oriented embedded tasks. Examples: 8051, PIC, AVR. It has bit-manipulation instructions and fast interrupt response, and is low in cost and power.
2. **Digital Signal Processor (DSP):** tuned for numeric signal processing, with MAC unit, Harvard architecture, circular addressing and zero-overhead loops. Examples: TI TMS320, Analog Devices SHARC.
3. **Less-general ASIP for a specific domain:** processor customised for a given application class, e.g. network processors (packet handling), graphics/video processors, and image/audio codecs.

```text
 Flexibility ^   GPP
             |      ASIP (microcontroller, DSP, ...)
             |          SPP
             +--------------------------> Speed/efficiency
```

**Features:** program memory like a GPP (flexible), but datapath and instructions specialised, so better performance per cost and power than a GPP for its domain.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. An ASIP is:
   A. A programmable processor whose architecture and instruction set are optimised for a domain
   B. A fixed custom circuit with no program
   C. A PC CPU
   D. A memory chip
   Answer: A. It is a compromise between flexible GPPs and fast SPPs. (Key point: ASIP definition)

2. What does a microcontroller integrate?
   A. Only an ALU
   B. CPU, RAM/ROM, timers, I/O and serial ports on one chip
   C. Only a MAC unit
   D. Only an ADC
   Answer: B. It is tuned for control tasks, e.g. 8051, PIC, AVR. (Key point: Microcontroller)

3. Which examples are DSPs?
   A. Intel Core
   B. 8051 and PIC
   C. TI TMS320 and SHARC
   D. JPEG circuit
   Answer: C. TMS320 and SHARC are DSPs; 8051 and PIC are microcontrollers. (Key point: DSP)

4. An example of a less-general domain ASIP is:
   A. Hard disk
   B. Washing machine
   C. Desktop CPU
   D. Network processor
   Answer: D. Network, graphics/video processors are specific-domain ASIPs. (Key point: Less-general ASIP)
