## Question

How do general purpose processors differ from application specific instruction set processors (ASIPs)?

## Short answer

General-purpose processors use a generic instruction set and datapath for wide applications; ASIPs employ tailored instructions and a custom datapath optimized for a specific domain, yielding higher performance and lower power for that domain. Examples: GPP – Intel Core; ASIP – DSP, microcontroller.

## Answer

| Point | General-purpose processor (GPP) | ASIP |
|---|---|---|
| Target | Wide range of applications | A specific domain (signal processing, control, networking) |
| Instruction set | Generic, large | Specialised, tailored instructions (e.g. MAC) |
| Datapath | Standard ALU and registers | Custom datapath units for the domain |
| Performance | Average for any program | High for its domain |
| Power and cost | Higher power and cost for the same job | Lower for the intended task |
| Memory/peripherals | Mostly external | Often integrated on chip (ADC, timers) |
| Flexibility | Highest | Medium, limited to domain |
| Examples | Intel Core, ARM Cortex-A | DSP (TMS320), microcontroller (8051) |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the target of a GPP versus an ASIP?
   A. GPP: specific domain; ASIP: any program
   B. GPP: wide range of applications; ASIP: a specific domain
   C. Both identical
   D. Both single-purpose
Answer: B. ASIPs are tailored to a domain such as signal processing. (Key point: Target)

2. How do their instruction sets differ?
   A. Both have none
   B. ASIP generic
   C. GPP generic and large; ASIP specialised, e.g. MAC
   D. GPP has MAC only
Answer: C. ASIPs include tailored instructions for their domain. (Key point: Instruction set)

3. Which statement on flexibility is correct?
   A. GPP lowest
   B. ASIP highest
   C. Both zero
   D. GPP highest, ASIP medium
Answer: D. ASIP flexibility is limited to its domain. (Key point: Flexibility)

4. How do peripherals differ?
   A. GPP mostly external; ASIP often integrates ADC and timers on chip
   B. ASIP is always external
   C. GPP integrates all
   D. Neither has peripherals
Answer: A. ASIPs such as microcontrollers integrate peripherals, lowering cost and power. (Key point: Peripherals)
