## Question

Define embedded system. What are the typical characteristics of embedded systems?

## Short answer

An embedded system is a computer system designed for a dedicated function within a larger device. Typical characteristics: single-functioned, tightly constrained (cost, size, power), reactive and real-time, limited resources, high reliability, low power, interfaces with physical world via sensors/actuators.

## Answer

An **embedded system** is a computing system (processor + memory + I/O) designed to perform a specific dedicated function as part of a larger device, often under timing and resource limits.

#### Typical characteristics
1. **Single-functioned:** executes one program repeatedly (a washing machine controller does only that).
2. **Tightly constrained:** low cost, small size, low power, high performance, fast time-to-market.
3. **Reactive and real-time:** continuously reacts to changes in the environment and must compute results within deadlines (airbag must fire in milliseconds).
4. **Dedicated/application-specific:** hardware and software are tailored to the task.
5. **Limited resources:** small memory and slow clock compared with a PC.
6. **Hardware and software co-design:** both are developed together.
7. **Reliability and stability:** must run for years without a reset or maintenance.
8. **Interaction with the physical world:** uses sensors (input) and actuators (output) via ADC/DAC and other interfaces.
9. **Low power operation:** often battery powered.
10. **Little or no user interface to reprogram:** firmware is stored in ROM/flash.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. A washing machine controller shows which characteristic?
   A. General-purpose operation
   B. Single-functioned: it executes one program repeatedly
   C. Large resources
   D. User-installed software
Answer: B. Embedded systems perform one specific task repeatedly. (Key point: Single-functioned)

2. What does 'reactive and real-time' mean?
   A. It has no deadlines
   B. It runs only when the user restarts it
   C. The system reacts to the environment and must compute results within deadlines
   D. It processes data in batches overnight
Answer: C. Embedded systems respond continuously to environmental changes and must meet timing deadlines, e.g. an airbag firing in milliseconds. (Key point: Reactive and real-time)

3. Compared with a PC, an embedded system typically has:
   A. More memory and a faster clock
   B. A full desktop OS
   C. Unlimited storage
   D. Small memory and a slow clock
Answer: D. Limited resources: small memory and slow clock compared with a PC. (Key point: Limited resources)

4. How does an embedded system interact with the physical world?
   A. Using sensors (input) and actuators (output) via ADC/DAC and other interfaces
   B. Only through the keyboard
   C. Only through the internet
   D. It does not interact
Answer: A. Sensors feed inputs and actuators produce outputs, with ADC/DAC converting between analog and digital. (Key point: Interaction with the physical world)
