## Question

Describe the features (characteristics and advantages) of a DSP (digital signal processor), including the common features of ASIPs for digital signal processors.

## Short answer

A DSP features a hardware multiply-accumulate unit, Harvard architecture, zero-overhead loops, and special addressing modes for real-time signal processing. As an ASIP, it provides a tailored datapath with MAC and shifters, on-chip peripherals, and faster execution than a GPP for numeric intensive tasks.

## Answer

A **digital signal processor (DSP)** is an application-specific instruction-set processor optimised for repetitive, numeric-intensive signal-processing tasks such as filtering, FFT and convolution, on streams of real-time data (audio, video, radar, telecom).

#### Characteristics and advantages
- **Hardware multiply-accumulate (MAC) unit:** completes multiply and add in one cycle, the core of FIR/IIR filters (y = Σ a·x).
- **Harvard architecture:** separate program and data memories (often two data memories) allow instruction and operand fetch at once.
- **Pipelining and parallel execution:** several instructions overlap; VLIW or SIMD in modern DSPs.
- **Zero-overhead looping:** hardware loop counters avoid branch time.
- **Special addressing modes:** circular (modulo) addressing for buffers and bit-reversed addressing for FFT.
- **Fast on-chip memory** and DMA for high data throughput.
- **Fixed-point/floating-point and saturation arithmetic** to prevent overflow wrap-around.
- **Low power, low cost,** and real-time response with predictable timing.
- Good for processing continuous data streams quickly, giving better performance than a general-purpose processor at lower cost.

#### Common features of ASIPs for DSP
- A DSP is an ASIP: it has a datapath tailored to the domain (MAC, shifters, accumulators) and a smaller/specialised instruction set.
- Extra on-chip peripherals: ADC/DAC, timers, serial ports.
- Reduced program size and faster execution than a GPP for the same task, yet still programmable (flexible).

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the role of the hardware MAC unit?
   A. Decode bit-reversal only
   B. Store firmware
   C. Convert A/D
   D. Multiply and add in one cycle, the core of FIR/IIR filters
Answer: D. Filters compute sums of products, so a single-cycle multiply-accumulate speeds them greatly. (Key point: MAC unit)

2. Why do DSPs use Harvard architecture?
   A. Separate program and data memories allow instruction and operand fetch at once
   B. To use less memory
   C. To avoid pipelining
   D. To remove the ALU
Answer: A. Parallel access to program and data memories increases throughput. (Key point: Harvard architecture)

3. Circular and bit-reversed addressing are used for:
   A. Interrupt handling
   B. Circular buffers and FFT
   C. Boot loading
   D. Keyboard scanning
Answer: B. Circular (modulo) addressing suits buffers; bit-reversed addressing suits FFT. (Key point: Special addressing)

4. What does saturation arithmetic do?
   A. Removes loops
   B. Increases overflow
   C. Prevents overflow wrap-around
   D. Doubles the clock
Answer: C. Saturation clamps the result at the maximum value instead of wrapping around. (Key point: Zero-overhead loops and saturation)
