## Question

What are the common characteristics of embedded systems? Explain.

## Short answer

Embedded systems are single-functioned, tightly constrained (size, cost, power, performance), reactive and real-time, use dedicated hardware/software co-design, have limited resources, and must be highly reliable with low power consumption, often interfacing with the physical world.

## Answer

Embedded systems share these common characteristics:

1. **Single-functioned:** performs one specific task repeatedly, e.g. a microwave controller.
2. **Tightly constrained:** must be low cost, small, low power and fast at the same time.
3. **Reactive and real-time:** continuously responds to environmental events and must meet deadlines.
4. **Dedicated hardware and software:** designed together for one application (co-design).
5. **Limited resources:** small memory, slow processor, simple I/O compared with a PC.
6. **High reliability and stability:** expected to run continuously for long periods without failure, often unattended.
7. **Low power consumption:** many run on batteries.
8. **Interfaces with the physical world:** sensors, actuators, ADC/DAC.
9. **Firmware in ROM/flash:** program is stored permanently, not loaded by the user.
10. **Operates in harsh environments:** temperature, vibration, noise, so robustness is needed.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. 'Tightly constrained' means an embedded system must be:
   A. Only cheap
   B. Low cost, small, low power and fast at the same time
   C. Large and powerful
   D. Unconstrained in power
Answer: B. Multiple competing constraints must be met together. (Key point: Tightly constrained)

2. What does dedicated hardware and software (co-design) mean?
   A. Software is bought later from any vendor
   B. Hardware is generic
   C. Hardware and software are designed together for one application
   D. Only software is designed
Answer: C. Both are developed together and tailored to the application. (Key point: HW/SW co-design)

3. Where is the program of an embedded system usually stored?
   A. Loaded by the user from disk each time
   B. In the cloud only
   C. In the keyboard
   D. Permanently in ROM/flash
Answer: D. Firmware is stored in ROM/flash, not loaded by the user. (Key point: Firmware)

4. Why must embedded systems be robust?
   A. They operate in harsh conditions such as temperature, vibration and noise
   B. They are always in clean rooms
   C. They are restarted daily
   D. They have no power limits
Answer: A. Many operate in harsh environments and run unattended, so robustness and reliability are needed. (Key point: Harsh environment)
