## Question

How does an embedded system differ from a general purpose computing system?

## Short answer

Embedded systems are designed for a single dedicated function with tailored hardware/software and often real-time constraints, while general-purpose computing systems run multiple user-chosen applications on generic hardware. Embedded systems use firmware in ROM, have limited resources, and prioritize meeting deadlines at low power; general-purpose systems maximize throughput with abundant resources.

## Answer

A general-purpose computing system (PC/laptop) is built to run many different applications chosen by the user, whereas an embedded system is built for one dedicated function.

| Point | Embedded system | General-purpose computing system |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Dedicated, single-function | Multi-purpose |
| Hardware and software | Co-designed, tailored | Generic hardware, loadable software |
| Software changes | Firmware in ROM/flash, changed rarely | Applications installed or replaced freely |
| OS | None or RTOS | GPOS (Windows, Linux) |
| Real-time | Often real-time with deadlines | Generally non-real-time (best effort) |
| Performance goal | Meet the deadline at minimum cost and power | Maximise average throughput |
| Resources | Limited memory, small processor | Abundant RAM, disk, fast CPU |
| Power and size | Low power, small | Higher power, larger |
| Cost | Low per unit | Higher |
| Start-up | Instant | Boot time |
| Reliability | Must work continuously, no reboot | Reboots and crashes are tolerated |

Example: microwave oven controller versus a laptop.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the key difference in purpose?
   A. Embedded is multi-purpose
   B. Embedded is built for one dedicated function; general-purpose runs many user-chosen applications
   C. Both are single-purpose
   D. General-purpose has no software
Answer: B. Embedded systems are dedicated; general-purpose systems are multi-purpose. (Key point: Purpose)

2. What is the performance goal of an embedded system?
   A. Maximise average throughput
   B. Maximise cost
   C. Meet the deadline at minimum cost and power
   D. Ignore deadlines
Answer: C. Embedded systems must meet deadlines economically; general-purpose systems maximise average throughput. (Key point: Performance goal)

3. Which is true of start-up and reliability?
   A. Embedded boots slowly and crashes are fine
   B. General-purpose must never reboot
   C. General-purpose starts instantly
   D. Embedded starts instantly and must work continuously without reboot
Answer: D. Embedded systems start instantly and must run continuously; PCs have boot time and tolerate reboots. (Key point: Start-up and reliability)

4. How are hardware and software treated in an embedded system?
   A. Co-designed and tailored to the task
   B. Generic hardware with loadable software
   C. Software only
   D. Hardware only
Answer: A. Embedded hardware and software are co-designed; general-purpose systems use generic hardware with loadable software. (Key point: Hardware and software)
