## Question

What is an embedded system? Differentiate it from non-embedded systems with a suitable example.

## Short answer

An embedded system is a computer built into a larger device for one dedicated function, with fixed firmware and resource constraints. Unlike non-embedded systems (e.g., PCs) that run many user-installed programs, embedded systems are task-specific, often real-time, and cost/power optimized. Example: washing machine controller vs. desktop PC.

## Answer

An **embedded system** is a computer system (processor, memory, I/O) built into a larger device to perform one dedicated function, usually under real-time and resource constraints.

#### Difference from non-embedded (general-purpose) systems
| Point | Embedded system | Non-embedded system (PC) |
|---|---|---|
| Function | One specific task | Many tasks (general purpose) |
| Programmability | Firmware fixed in ROM/flash, rarely changed | User can install and run any program |
| Operating system | None, or a small RTOS | Full OS (Windows, Linux) |
| Resources | Small memory, slow clock | Large RAM, disk, fast CPU |
| Cost and size | Low cost, small | Higher cost, bulky |
| Power | Low power, often battery | High power, mains |
| Timing | Often hard/soft real-time | Usually not real-time |
| User interface | Limited keys/LEDs/LCD | Keyboard, mouse, monitor |
| Reliability | Runs for years unattended | Restarted often |

**Example:** A washing machine controller (microcontroller + firmware + sensors + motor driver) is embedded: it only controls washing. A desktop PC is non-embedded: the same hardware runs word processing, games or programming.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How does the function of an embedded system differ from a PC?
   A. Embedded does many tasks; PC does one
   B. Embedded does one specific task; PC does many tasks
   C. Both do exactly one task
   D. Neither has software
Answer: B. Embedded systems are dedicated; PCs are general purpose. (Key point: Function)

2. Which is true of embedded firmware?
   A. Users install any program freely
   B. It is reloaded every boot from disk
   C. It is fixed in ROM/flash and rarely changed
   D. It is always a full Windows OS
Answer: C. Embedded firmware is fixed in ROM/flash; PC users can install and run any program. (Key point: Programmability)

3. Which pair describes embedded systems versus PCs on OS and timing?
   A. Full OS, never real-time
   B. No OS, never real-time
   C. Full OS, hard real-time
   D. None or small RTOS, often hard/soft real-time
Answer: D. Embedded systems use no OS or a small RTOS and are often real-time; PCs use a full OS and are usually not real-time. (Key point: Timing and OS)

4. Why is a washing machine controller embedded while a desktop PC is not?
   A. The controller only controls washing; the PC's same hardware runs many applications
   B. The washing machine has more RAM
   C. The PC has no processor
   D. The controller has a keyboard
Answer: A. Dedicated function makes it embedded; general-purpose use makes a PC non-embedded. (Key point: Example)
