## Question

Briefly explain RTOS (Real Time Operating System) with its services.

## Short answer

An RTOS is an operating system designed for deterministic, bounded response times, with preemptive priority scheduling and small footprint. It provides task management, scheduling, inter-task communication, synchronization, time services, interrupt management, memory management, and device I/O.

## Answer

A **Real-Time Operating System (RTOS)** is an OS designed for systems where results must be produced within a guaranteed time. It gives deterministic, bounded response, fast context switching and pre-emptive priority scheduling, with a small memory footprint. Examples: VxWorks, FreeRTOS, uC/OS-II, QNX.

#### Services provided by an RTOS
1. **Task management:** create, delete, suspend, resume tasks; priority setting.
2. **Scheduling:** priority-based pre-emptive scheduling (and round robin among equal priorities); context switching.
3. **Inter-task communication:** message queues, mailboxes, pipes, shared memory, event flags.
4. **Synchronisation:** semaphores (binary and counting), mutexes with priority inheritance.
5. **Time services:** system tick, delays, time-outs, software timers.
6. **Interrupt management:** fast interrupt handling and ISR-to-task signalling.
7. **Memory management:** fixed-size block allocation, memory protection.
8. **Device I/O services:** device drivers and a uniform API.
9. **File system and networking** (TCP/IP stack) in larger RTOS.
10. **Error handling and fault tolerance** (watchdog support).

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What defines an RTOS?
   A. It has a graphical desktop
   B. It maximises memory use
   C. Results are produced within a guaranteed time with deterministic response
   D. It never uses interrupts
Answer: C. Determinism and bounded response are the essence. (Key point: RTOS definition)

2. Which service is mutexes with priority inheritance part of?
   A. Memory management
   B. Synchronisation
   C. Time services
   D. File system
Answer: B. Priority inheritance in mutexes addresses priority inversion. (Key point: Priority inheritance)

3. Which are inter-task communication services?
   A. Message queues, mailboxes, pipes, event flags
   B. Semaphores only for timing
   C. Watchdog and tick
   D. Device drivers
Answer: A. These let tasks exchange data and signals. (Key point: Inter-task communication)

4. Which belongs to time services?
   A. Message queues
   B. Fixed block allocation
   C. Device drivers
   D. System tick, delays, time-outs, software timers
Answer: D. Time services support periodic and timed behaviour. (Key point: Time services)
