## Question

Differentiate between Real Time OS (RTOS) and General-purpose OS (GPOS).

## Short answer

An RTOS guarantees deterministic timing, priority-based preemptive scheduling, and low bounded interrupt/context-switch latency with a small kernel. A GPOS targets throughput, fairness, and user convenience, using time-sharing and larger kernel with high, unpredictable latency.

## Answer

An **RTOS (Real-Time OS)** guarantees that tasks complete within defined time limits (deterministic behaviour). A **GPOS** (Windows, Linux desktop) is designed for good average throughput and user convenience.

| Point | RTOS | GPOS |
|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Meet deadlines, predictability | Maximum throughput, fairness, user-friendliness |
| Response time | Deterministic and bounded | Not guaranteed, varies |
| Scheduling | Priority-based pre-emptive (RMS, EDF) | Time-sharing, fairness-based (round robin, dynamic priority) |
| Kernel size | Small (kilobytes), memory-efficient | Large (megabytes) |
| Latency (interrupt, context switch) | Very low, bounded | Higher, unpredictable |
| Memory management | Often static, no virtual memory | Virtual memory, paging, swapping |
| Priority inversion | Handled (priority inheritance) | Usually not handled |
| User interface / features | Minimal, no GUI | Rich GUI, many features |
| Applications | Embedded and critical systems: pacemaker, aircraft, robot | Desktop, server, general applications |
| Examples | VxWorks, FreeRTOS, uC/OS-II, QNX | Windows, Linux, macOS |

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the main goal of an RTOS compared with a GPOS?
   A. Meeting deadlines with predictable response; GPOS aims at throughput and user convenience
   B. Rich GUI; GPOS aims at determinism
   C. Maximum throughput; GPOS aims at deadlines
   D. Virtual memory; GPOS has none
Answer: A. An RTOS guarantees tasks complete within defined time limits. (Key point: Main goal)

2. Which scheduling is typical of an RTOS?
   A. FIFO without priorities
   B. Priority-based pre-emptive (RMS, EDF)
   C. Fairness-based time sharing only
   D. Random
Answer: B. GPOS uses time-sharing and fairness-based scheduling. (Key point: Scheduling)

3. How is latency in an RTOS?
   A. Unbounded
   B. Same as GPOS
   C. Very low and bounded
   D. Higher and unpredictable
Answer: C. Deterministic bounded latency is a key RTOS property. (Key point: Latency)

4. How do RTOS and GPOS treat priority inversion?
   A. Both use virtual memory
   B. RTOS handles it with priority inheritance; GPOS usually does not
   C. GPOS handles it; RTOS does not
   D. Neither
Answer: B. Priority inheritance is used in RTOS. (Key point: Priority inversion)
