## Question

What is meant by flow pattern in a plant layout? Describe with sketches the common flow patterns and state the factors for choosing one.

## Short answer

A flow pattern is the path of materials from receiving to shipping. Common patterns include straight line, L-shape, U-shape, circular, S-shape, and odd-angle layouts. Selection factors are building shape, operation sequence, product size, material handling system, and receiving/shipping points.

## Answer

A **flow pattern** is the path followed by materials as they move from receiving, through the operations, to the shipping of the finished product. A good pattern avoids back-tracking and cross-flow, keeps distances short and allows expansion.

#### Common flow patterns
```text
1. Straight line        2. L-shape           3. U-shape
 In -> -> -> -> Out      In -> -> -+          In  -> -> -+
                                   |                     |
                                   v                     |
                                  Out         Out <- <- -+
4. Circular (O)         5. S / serpentine    6. Odd angle
   +---->----+           In -> -> -> -+       In --\     /--> Out
   ^         |                        |             \   /
   |         v           +-- <- <- <- +              \_/
   +----<----+           |                     (short, direct
                         +-> -> -> -> Out       paths between areas)
```

1. **Straight line:** simple; used for short processes with few operations when the building is long enough. Easy to control, but may need a long building.
2. **L-shape:** used when the building shape or other facilities do not allow a straight line.
3. **U-shape:** receiving and shipping are on the same side, which allows common use of docks, supervision and material handling equipment. Common in JIT cells.
4. **Circular:** input and output are at the same point; useful when the operator or fixture returns to the start (e.g. pallets).
5. **S-shape (serpentine):** long process lines are folded to fit into a compact area.
6. **Odd-angle:** used for short runs where handling is mainly by conveyors, or where the space is irregular.

#### Factors for selection
Building shape and size, number and sequence of operations, product size and volume, material handling system, location of receiving and shipping, and possible future expansion.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is a flow pattern?
   A. The wage pattern of workers
   B. The path followed by materials from receiving through operations to shipping
   C. The shape of the roof
   D. The delivery schedule
   Answer: B. A flow pattern is the material path from receiving to shipping, ideally without back-tracking or cross-flow. (Key point: Flow pattern)

2. What is the main advantage of a U-shape flow?
   A. It needs the longest building
   B. Receiving and shipping are on the same side, allowing shared docks and supervision
   C. It suits only very short processes
   D. It needs no conveyor
   Answer: B. U-shape places receiving and shipping together and is common in JIT cells. (Key point: U-shape)

3. When is the S-shape (serpentine) pattern used?
   A. For one operation only
   B. For pallets returning to start
   C. To fold long process lines into a compact area
   D. For fixed products
   Answer: C. S-shape folds long lines to fit a compact space. (Key point: Serpentine)

4. Which is a factor for choosing a flow pattern?
   A. Colour of machines
   B. Name of the owner
   C. Number of managers
   D. Building shape, number and sequence of operations, handling system and future expansion
   Answer: D. These factors determine which pattern fits the plant. (Key point: Selection factors)
