## Question

Write short notes on Total Planned Quality Maintenance (TPQM) and explain how it relates to TPM and TQM.

## Short answer

Total Planned Quality Maintenance (TPQM) merges planned maintenance with quality management by controlling machine conditions that cause defects. It links TPM's equipment focus and TQM's quality focus to prevent defects at source and reduce scrap.

## Answer

**Total Planned Quality Maintenance (TPQM)** is an approach that joins planned maintenance with quality management. It is based on the idea that product quality depends on equipment condition, so the machine conditions that produce good quality are identified, measured and kept under control through planned maintenance. The aim is to prevent defects at the source instead of detecting them by inspection after production.

#### Basic idea
Defects are caused by the "4Ms" - machine, method, material and man. TPQM controls the machine factor by:
1. Finding the relation between machine conditions (wear, vibration, temperature, alignment, tool condition) and each quality characteristic.
2. Setting standards for these conditions.
3. Checking them regularly and correcting them before they drift out of limits.
4. Recording the results and improving the standards.

```text
 TPM (equipment effectiveness)  +  TQM (quality of product)
              \                      /
               +---- TPQM ----------+
   planned maintenance aimed at zero defects
```

#### Steps
- Make a quality-defect analysis and link each defect to a machine condition.
- Set quality-related check points in the maintenance schedule.
- Train operators to monitor and adjust them (autonomous maintenance).
- Use control charts and Pareto analysis to review the results.

#### Relation to TPM and TQM
TPM works for zero breakdowns, and TQM for customer satisfaction through quality. TPQM is the meeting point: it applies TPM's planned maintenance and quality maintenance pillars so that maintenance contributes directly to product quality.

#### Benefits
Fewer defects and less rework, lower scrap and inspection cost, longer equipment life, better delivery.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the basic idea of TPQM?
   A. Inspect products after production to sort defects
   B. Product quality results from equipment condition, so planned maintenance controls the machine conditions that give good quality
   C. Replace machines every year
   D. Increase operator numbers
   Answer: B. TPQM prevents defects at the source by controlling machine conditions linked to quality. (Key point: TPQM idea)

2. Defects come from the 4Ms. Which does TPQM mainly control?
   A. Man
   B. Method
   C. Material
   D. Machine
   Answer: D. TPQM controls the machine factor (wear, vibration, temperature, alignment, tool condition). (Key point: Machine factor)

3. Which is a step in TPQM?
   A. Link each defect to a machine condition and set quality-related check points in the maintenance schedule
   B. Remove all inspection records
   C. Wait for failure before acting
   D. Ignore operator involvement
   Answer: A. Defect analysis, standards, regular checks and correction are the core steps. (Key point: Steps)

4. How is TPQM related to TPM and TQM?
   A. It replaces both
   B. It is the meeting point: planned maintenance of TPM aimed at the quality goals of TQM
   C. It is unrelated to both
   D. It is only the 5S activity
   Answer: B. TPM aims at zero breakdown, TQM at customer satisfaction; TPQM joins them. (Key point: Relation to TPM and TQM)
