## Question

Why is distribution substation important? Explain with single line diagram of 11 kV distribution sub-station.

## Short answer

Distribution substations step down 11 kV to 400/230 V near loads, reducing losses and providing protection, metering and voltage regulation. A typical SLD shows incoming 11 kV feeder, LA, AB switch, DO fuse, 11/0.4 kV Dyn11 transformer, LT breaker, MDB, and SDBs feeding motors at 400 V and lighting/sockets at230 V.

## Answer

A distribution substation receives power at 11 kV (or 33 kV) and steps it down to 400/230 V, while providing switching, protection and metering for the consumers it supplies.

#### Importance of distribution substation
1. **Voltage transformation**: utilization equipment works at 400/230 V; power is transmitted economically at 11 kV and stepped down near the loads.
2. **Reduced losses**: placing the substation near the load centre keeps the LT (high-current) cable short, reducing I²R loss and voltage drop.
3. **Protection**: LAs, fuses, breakers and relays isolate faults quickly and protect the transformer, lines and consumers.
4. **Control and switching**: individual feeders can be switched off for maintenance without disturbing others.
5. **Metering**: energy and maximum demand measurement for billing and energy audit.
6. **Power quality**: tap changing for voltage regulation and capacitor banks for power factor correction.
7. **Reliability**: in industries, duplicate transformers and bus couplers keep supply available during faults.
8. **Neutral and earthing**: the Dyn11 transformer gives an earthed neutral for 3-phase 4-wire supply and safe single-phase loads.

**Explanation**: incoming 11 kV supply passes through lightning arresters (surge protection), an AB switch (isolation) and DO fuses or a VCB (protection) to the 11/0.4 kV transformer. The LT side has a main breaker and meter feeding the MDB, from which MCCB-protected feeders go to SDBs and an APFC panel. SDBs supply motors at 400 V and lighting and sockets at 230 V through MCBs and RCCBs.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How does a substation near the load centre reduce losses?
   A. It raises the LT voltage above 400 V
   B. It eliminates transformer iron loss
   C. It increases the power factor to unity
   D. It keeps the high-current LT cable short, cutting I2R loss and voltage drop
Answer: D. Power is carried at 11 kV economically and stepped down close to the loads. (Key point: Reduced losses)

2. Which devices form the protective function in the substation?
   A. Only energy meters
   B. Lightning arresters, fuses, breakers and relays
   C. Only capacitor banks
   D. Only busbars
Answer: B. They isolate faults quickly and protect the transformer, lines and consumers. (Key point: Protection role)

3. How does the substation improve power quality?
   A. By converting AC to DC
   B. By raising frequency
   C. By removing the neutral
   D. Tap changing for voltage regulation and capacitor banks for power factor correction
Answer: D. Tap changers regulate voltage and APFC capacitors correct power factor. (Key point: Power quality)
