## Question

Explain in brief any four types of operating system.

## Short answer

Batch OS runs jobs without interaction; time-sharing switches the CPU among users for interactive response. Real-time OS guarantees responses within deadlines; distributed OS manages networked computers as a single system.

## Answer

#### 1. Batch operating system
Jobs with similar needs are collected into a batch by an operator and run one after another without user interaction. Input is prepared on cards/tape. It gives good CPU use but long turnaround time and no interactivity. Example: payroll processing, IBM OS/360 batch mode.

#### 2. Multiprogramming / time-sharing operating system
Several programs are kept in memory; when one waits for I/O, the CPU is given to another, so the CPU is always busy (multiprogramming). In **time-sharing**, the CPU is switched among users every few milliseconds so each user gets interactive response and feels that the machine is theirs. Examples: UNIX, Linux, Windows.

#### 3. Real-time operating system (RTOS)
Used when results must be produced within a fixed time limit (deadline). In a *hard* real-time system missing a deadline is a failure (airbag, missile control, pacemaker); in a *soft* real-time system occasional misses are tolerable (video streaming). It uses priority-based scheduling and fast interrupt handling. Examples: VxWorks, QNX.

#### 4. Distributed operating system
Manages a collection of independent computers connected by a network and makes them look like a single system. Resources and computation are shared across nodes, giving speed, reliability (failure of a node does not stop the system) and resource sharing. Examples: Amoeba, LOCUS.

Other types are multiprocessor (parallel), network and embedded/mobile operating systems.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is a key feature of a batch OS?
   A. Users get immediate interactive response
   B. Similar jobs are grouped and run one after another without user interaction, with long turnaround
   C. Jobs must meet strict deadlines
   D. Several computers appear as one
Answer: B. Batch gives good CPU use but no interactivity. (Key point: Batch OS)

2. In a time-sharing OS, how does each user feel the machine is theirs?
   A. Each user gets a dedicated CPU
   B. Jobs run only overnight
   C. The CPU is switched among users every few milliseconds
   D. Jobs run only in sequence to completion
Answer: C. Fast switching gives interactive response. (Key point: Time-sharing)

3. Which is a hard real-time example?
   A. Video streaming
   B. Watching a movie
   C. Web browsing
   D. Airbag or pacemaker control
Answer: D. Missing a deadline in hard real time is a failure; soft allows occasional misses. (Key point: Hard vs soft real time)

4. Why does failure of one node not stop a distributed OS?
   A. Resources and computation are shared across independent nodes, giving reliability
   B. All nodes share one CPU
   C. The system has only one node
   D. A master node does everything
Answer: A. Independent computers provide reliability and resource sharing. (Key point: Distributed OS benefit)
