## Question

What are the advantages of UNIX? Draw the structure of the UNIX operating system.

## Short answer

UNIX advantages: multi-user, multitasking, portable (written in C), hierarchical file system treating devices as files, powerful shell with pipes and filters, and security via permissions. Structure: layered with hardware at bottom, kernel (process, memory, file management) above, system-call interface, then shell and libraries, and user applications on top.

## Answer

#### Advantages of UNIX

- **Multi-user and multitasking**: many users and processes run at the same time.
- **Portable**: written mostly in C, so it runs on many hardware platforms.
- **Hierarchical file system** where devices are also treated as files, giving uniform I/O.
- **Powerful shell and utilities**: pipes, filters, redirection and shell scripts let small tools be combined.
- **Security and protection**: file permissions (rwx), user/group ownership and passwords.
- **Stable and efficient**, with built-in networking and many free, open versions (Linux, BSD).

#### Structure of UNIX

UNIX has a layered (monolithic kernel) structure.

```text
+--------------------------------------+
|  Users                               |
|  Shells, commands, compilers, libs   |
+--------------------------------------+
|  System-call interface to the kernel |
+--------------------------------------+
| KERNEL                               |
|  +---------------+ +---------------+ |
|  | File system   | | Process ctrl: | |
|  | block/char I/O| | scheduler,    | |
|  | device drivers| | memory mgmt,  | |
|  +---------------+ | IPC           | |
|                    +---------------+ |
+--------------------------------------+
|  Kernel interface to the hardware    |
+--------------------------------------+
|  Hardware: CPU, memory, disks, I/O   |
+--------------------------------------+
```

- **Hardware** is the lowest level.
- **Kernel** manages processes, memory, files and devices, and gives services through the **system-call interface**.
- **Shell and libraries** sit above the system calls: the shell is the command interpreter.
- **Utilities and applications** (editors, compilers, user programs) are the outer layer used by users.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is UNIX portable?
   A. It is written mostly in C, so it runs on many hardware platforms
   B. It is written entirely in assembly
   C. It runs only on one CPU
   D. It has no kernel
   Answer: A. C allows porting across platforms. (Key point: Portability)

2. What is special about UNIX I/O?
   A. Devices are never accessible
   B. Devices are treated as files in a hierarchical file system, giving uniform I/O
   C. Each device needs its own commands
   D. Files are not supported
   Answer: B. Uniform file-based I/O is a UNIX advantage. (Key point: Devices as files)

3. Which order is correct from top to bottom in UNIX structure?
   A. Hardware, kernel, users
   B. Kernel, users, hardware
   C. Users/shells and libraries, system-call interface, kernel, hardware
   D. System-call interface, users, kernel only
   Answer: C. Users sit above system calls; kernel manages hardware. (Key point: Structure order)
