## Question

Describe the importance of wastewater and solid waste management for a community. Describe the methods (components) used in the management of wastewater and solid waste produced from a community.

## Short answer

Wastewater and solid waste management protects public health, water sources, environment, prevents flooding, provides economic benefits, and fulfills legal duties. Wastewater management involves collection via sewers, treatment (preliminary, primary, secondary, tertiary), sludge treatment, and disposal. Solid waste management follows generation, storage, collection, transfer, transport, treatment/recovery (composting, biogas, recycling), and final disposal (sanitary landfill, incineration).

## Answer

Wastewater and solid waste are produced every day by every household, market, hospital and industry. If they are not collected, treated and disposed of properly, they cause disease, bad smell, pollution of water and soil, and loss of property value.

#### Importance of management
- **Public health:** untreated sewage carries pathogens that cause cholera, typhoid, dysentery, hepatitis and diarrhoea. Heaps of garbage breed flies, rats and mosquitoes.
- **Protection of water sources:** it prevents pollution of rivers, lakes and groundwater that supply drinking water downstream.
- **Environment and aesthetics:** it removes foul odour, clogged drains and dumped refuse, and so keeps the city clean and attractive.
- **Prevents flooding:** blocked drains full of solid waste cause urban flooding (as seen in Kathmandu's rivers and drains).
- **Economic benefit:** treated water can be reused for irrigation, biogas and compost can be produced, and tourism and land value improve.
- **Legal duty:** the Local Government Operation Act and the Solid Waste Management Act, 2068 make local bodies responsible for the service.

#### Methods (components) of wastewater management
1. **Collection:** house connections, lateral and main sewers, appurtenances (manholes, inlets) carry sewage by gravity to one point. Systems are separate, combined or partially separate.
2. **Treatment:** preliminary (screens, grit chamber), primary (sedimentation), secondary (trickling filter, activated sludge, oxidation pond) and sometimes tertiary treatment.
3. **Sludge treatment:** thickening, digestion and drying beds.
4. **Disposal:** by dilution in a river or lake, or on land (irrigation, sewage farming). On-site systems (septic tank, pit latrine) serve areas without sewers.

#### Methods of solid waste management
```text
Generation -> Storage -> Collection -> Transfer
   -> Transport -> Treatment/Resource recovery -> Disposal
```
1. **Source reduction and segregation** into organic, recyclable and residual waste.
2. **Storage and collection** in bins, door-to-door vehicles.
3. **Transportation** by tractors, tippers, compactors, often through a transfer station.
4. **Treatment and recovery:** composting, biogas, recycling.
5. **Final disposal:** sanitary landfill, incineration (for hospital and hazardous waste).

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why does untreated sewage and uncollected garbage threaten public health?
   A. Sewage carries pathogens and garbage breeds flies, rats and mosquitoes
   B. Sewage lowers the pH of drinking water only
   C. Garbage increases the water table
   D. Sewage reduces oxygen in the air
   Answer: A. Pathogens in sewage cause cholera, typhoid and dysentery, and garbage heaps breed disease vectors. (Key point: Public health)

2. Which sequence correctly lists the components of wastewater management?
   A. Disposal, collection, sludge treatment, treatment
   B. Treatment, collection, disposal, sludge treatment
   C. Collection, treatment, sludge treatment, disposal
   D. Collection, disposal, treatment, sludge treatment
   Answer: C. Sewage is collected, treated, its sludge is treated, and effluent is finally disposed of. (Key point: Wastewater management components)

3. In solid waste management, what is the purpose of source segregation?
   A. To increase the volume sent to landfill
   B. To separate organic, recyclable and residual waste so each can be treated suitably
   C. To avoid the need for collection vehicles
   D. To burn all waste at the household
   Answer: B. Segregation into organic, recyclable and residual waste allows composting, recycling and proper disposal. (Key point: Solid waste handling)

4. Which is the method of final disposal for solid waste, with incineration used for hospital and hazardous waste?
   A. Trickling filter
   B. Sanitary landfill
   C. Grit chamber
   D. Digestion
   Answer: B. Sanitary landfill is the general final disposal; incineration is kept for hospital and hazardous waste. (Key point: Final disposal of solid waste)
