## Question

With a neat sketch, describe the suitable septic tank effluent disposal method for the area of high ground water table and for the rocky area.

## Short answer

For high water table, build an evapotranspiration mound with perforated pipes in a gravel bed over sand, planted with grass, base ≥1 m above water table. For rocky areas, construct a sealed sand‑filter bed or ET mound on rock with imported sand and soil, then discharge to drain or reuse.

## Answer

Septic tank effluent still has a high BOD and contains pathogens, so it must be disposed of in a way that lets the soil or plants complete the treatment. Soak pits and trenches need deep, permeable soil, so for a high water table or rocky ground the following methods are used.

- **Dispersion trench with raised (mound) bed / evapotranspiration mound:** for a high ground-water table, effluent is applied to an above-ground sand mound or to shallow trenches (0.3-0.5 m deep) so that the bottom stays at least 1 m above the water table. Effluent is distributed through perforated pipes in a gravel bed inside a built-up sand mound planted with grass or high-transpiring plants; part of it evaporates and the rest percolates.
- **Constructed wetland / reed bed:** a lined gravel bed planted with reeds treats the effluent biologically; the outflow is then used for irrigation or released to a drain.
- **Rocky area:** the soil is too shallow to absorb the effluent, so a soak pit cannot be dug. The effluent is led to a sealed sand-filter bed built above the rock, and the filtered effluent is disinfected and discharged to a nearby stream or drain; or an evapotranspiration mound is built on the rock surface with imported sand and soil. Where there is bare rock, the effluent can be piped to a sealed holding tank and reused for gardening.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Soak pits and trenches need
   A. Impermeable clay
   B. Deep, permeable soil above the water table
   C. Shallow rock
   D. A high water table
Answer: B. High water table or rocky ground does not provide this, so alternative methods are used. (Key point: Why not soak pits)

2. For high ground water, the mound or shallow trench is built so that
   A. It is flooded by the water table
   B. It is below the water table
   C. The bottom stays at least 1 m above the water table
   D. It touches the water table
Answer: C. Raising the bed on sand avoids contamination of groundwater. (Key point: Mound for high water table)

3. For a rocky area where a soak pit cannot be dug, a suitable option is
   A. A deeper soak pit
   B. Direct discharge into a well
   C. A pit latrine in the rock
   D. A sealed sand filter or ET mound built on the rock surface
Answer: D. Imported sand and soil on rock give treatment without needing deep soil. (Key point: Rocky area)
