## Question

Explain the importance of map study in highway survey.

## Short answer

Map study is the initial survey stage using topographic maps to identify alternative alignments before fieldwork. It is quick and cheap, identifies obligatory points and topography, shows features to avoid or cross, rejects unsuitable routes early, estimates approximate length and earthwork, guides reconnaissance, and can utilize modern tools like GIS and DEM, though maps may be outdated and lack soil data.

## Answer

Map study is the first stage of the survey in which possible alignments are studied on topographic maps before going to the field.

**Importance**
1. **Quick and cheap:** gives alternative routes without costly field work.
2. **Identifies the obligatory points** such as passes, bridge sites, towns.
3. **Shows the topography:** contours show ridges, valleys, steep slopes and the possible gradients.
4. **Shows features** like rivers, lakes, forest, settlement, existing roads and railways which must be avoided or crossed.
5. **Helps to reject unsuitable routes** early and limits the fieldwork to the promising ones.
6. **Gives approximate length and earthwork** and helps to estimate cost.
7. **Guides reconnaissance:** the field team knows what to check.
8. **Can use modern tools:** satellite images, DEM and GIS for better and faster results.

Limitation: maps may be old and give no soil or geology data, so the field survey must verify them.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is map study a good first stage?
   A. It is quick and cheap and gives alternative routes without field work
   B. It gives soil CBR values
   C. It gives final levels
   D. It replaces reconnaissance
Answer: A. Map study gives alternative alignments at low cost before going to the field. (Key point: Why map study first)

2. What do contours on topographic maps show?
   A. Soil type
   B. Ridges, valleys, steep slopes and possible gradients
   C. Traffic volume
   D. Rock strength
Answer: B. Contours show terrain shape and so possible gradients. (Key point: Information from maps)

3. What is a limitation of map study?
   A. It is costly
   B. It cannot show rivers
   C. Maps may be old and give no soil or geology data, so field survey must verify
   D. It needs a theodolite
Answer: C. Maps can be outdated and lack soil/geology, so reconnaissance is needed. (Key point: Limitation)
