## Question

Explain the different modes of transportation (classification of the transportation system).

## Short answer

Modes: road (flexible, door-to-door), rail (high-capacity bulk), water (cheapest for heavy cargo), air (fastest, expensive), pipeline (continuous fluid flow), and ropeways for steep terrain. In Nepal, road dominates; air serves remote hills and ropeways special cases.

## Answer

A mode of transport is the means or medium by which people and goods are moved. The five main modes are road, rail, water, air and pipeline (with ropeways and cable cars as special cases).

#### 1. Roadways
- Use roads; vehicles run on their own wheels.
- Door-to-door service, flexible, cheap to build; best for short and medium haul.
- Limits: lower capacity, higher accident and pollution rates, high cost for long haul.

#### 2. Railways
- Use steel track; high capacity, low operating cost per tonne-km, suitable for bulk goods and long-distance travel.
- Limits: very high capital cost, fixed route and timetable, needs gentle gradients (about 1 in 100), and terminal handling is needed.

#### 3. Waterways
- Inland (rivers, canals) and sea/ocean transport.
- Cheapest for bulk cargo and heavy goods; very low energy use.
- Limits: slow, depends on natural water routes and weather, needs ports.

#### 4. Airways
- Fastest mode; useful for long distances, urgent and high-value goods, and passengers; reaches remote areas.
- Limits: highest cost per tonne-km, small capacity, depends on weather, high airport cost.

#### 5. Pipelines
- For liquids/gases (oil, gas, water); continuous, safe, low operating cost.
- Limits: only for fluids, fixed route, large initial cost.

#### 6. Ropeways / cable cars
- Used in steep mountain terrain (e.g. Kurintar-Manakamana, Thankot-Chandragiri); well suited to hills.

| Mode | Speed | Capacity | Cost | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Road | Medium | Low-medium | Low-medium | Short/medium, door-to-door |
| Rail | Medium-high | High | High capital | Bulk, long distance |
| Water | Low | Very high | Lowest | Bulk, international |
| Air | Highest | Low | Highest | Urgent, long distance |
| Pipeline | Low | High | Low operating | Fluids |

In Nepal, road is dominant, air is important for the remote hills, and ropeways serve special cases; rail and inland waterways are still minor.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which list gives the five main modes of transport?
   A. Road, rail, water, air, pipeline
   B. Road, rail, ropeway, cable car, walking
   C. Road, bus, truck, train, ship
   D. Road, rail, air, ropeway, bicycle
Answer: A. The five main modes are road, rail, water, air and pipeline, with ropeways as a special case. (Key point: Main modes)

2. Which is a limitation of railways?
   A. Low capacity for bulk goods
   B. Very high capital cost, fixed route and timetable, and need for gentle gradients
   C. Highest operating cost per tonne-km of all modes
   D. Cannot carry long-distance passengers
Answer: B. Railways are high-capacity but need heavy capital, fixed routes and gentle gradients (about 1 in 100). (Key point: Railway limitations)

3. For which purpose are waterways most suitable?
   A. Urgent high-value goods
   B. Door-to-door delivery
   C. Cheap movement of bulk and heavy cargo with very low energy use
   D. Carrying fluids continuously
Answer: C. Waterways are the cheapest for bulk cargo but are slow and depend on natural routes and weather. (Key point: Waterways for bulk cargo)

4. Which pairing of mode and characteristic is correct?
   A. Air: lowest cost per tonne-km
   B. Pipeline: suited to any solid cargo
   C. Air: highest speed but highest cost per tonne-km and small capacity
   D. Pipeline: flexible route
Answer: C. Air is fastest yet most costly with small capacity; pipelines carry only fluids on a fixed route. (Key point: Air transport and pipelines)
