## Question

Explain the role of transportation in society and in the development of a country.

## Short answer

Transportation enables trade, agriculture, industry, tourism, and raises land value. Socially, it provides access to health, education, and unifies regions. In Nepal, the Mahendra Highway and north-south corridors are vital for development, but balanced planning is needed to mitigate accidents and pollution.

## Answer

Transportation moves people, goods and information; it is the backbone of the social and economic life of any country.

#### Economic role
- **Trade and markets:** takes raw materials to industry and products to markets; allows large-scale production and regional specialisation.
- **Employment and income:** gives jobs in construction, driving, repair and trade; raises rural income.
- **Agricultural development:** farm produce reaches markets before it spoils, and inputs (fertiliser, seed) reach farmers.
- **Industrial development:** industries are located where transport is available.
- **Tourism:** access to Pokhara, Lumbini, the Everest region etc. earns foreign currency.
- **Land value:** land near roads gains value.

#### Social role
- Access to **health, education and services**; helps in disaster relief.
- **National unity:** links distant regions and communities and helps cultural exchange.
- Improves living standards and reduces the isolation of remote areas.
- Allows people to move for jobs and settlement.

#### Political and defence role
- Administration and security forces can reach all areas; roads to the border are strategically important.

#### In the development of a country
Developed nations have dense transport networks. For Nepal, the east-west Mahendra Highway, the north-south corridors (Kodari, Kerung, Kaligandaki) and the other strategic roads are the base of national development. However, poorly planned transport can also lead to accidents, pollution and congestion, so planning must be balanced.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. How does transportation help agricultural development?
   A. It makes farm produce reach markets before spoiling and brings inputs like fertiliser to farmers
   B. It reduces demand for farm produce
   C. It stops regional specialisation
   D. It only helps tourism
Answer: A. Transport carries produce to markets quickly and brings seed and fertiliser to farmers. (Key point: Economic role in agriculture and trade)

2. Which is a social role of transportation?
   A. Raising land tax
   B. Increasing isolation of remote areas
   C. Reducing national unity
   D. Giving access to health and education and helping disaster relief
Answer: D. Transport gives access to services, aids relief, unites regions and reduces isolation. (Key point: Social role)

3. Why must transport planning be balanced?
   A. Because transport has no side effects
   B. Because poor planning can cause accidents, pollution and congestion
   C. Because roads should never be built
   D. Because only defence matters
Answer: B. Besides benefits, poorly planned transport can create accidents, pollution and congestion. (Key point: Balanced planning)
