## Question

List out the functions of the physical layer in the TCP/IP reference model.

## Short answer

Functions include bit representation and encoding, defining data rate, synchronization, physical topology, transmission mode, interface and media specification, and line configuration.

## Answer

In the TCP/IP model the physical layer (together with the data link layer, called host-to-network layer) performs:

1. **Bit representation:** converts bits (0s and 1s) into electrical, optical or radio signals (encoding).
2. **Data rate:** defines how many bits are sent per second (bit duration).
3. **Synchronization:** keeps sender and receiver clocks aligned at bit level.
4. **Physical topology:** defines the arrangement of devices (bus, star, ring, mesh).
5. **Transmission mode:** simplex, half duplex or full duplex.
6. **Interface and media specification:** connectors, cables, pin layout, voltage levels.
7. **Line configuration:** point-to-point or multipoint connection.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What does bit representation (encoding) do?
   A. Converts 0s and 1s into electrical, optical or radio signals
   B. Adds MAC addresses
   C. Routes packets
   D. Encrypts data
Answer: A. The physical layer converts bits to signals. (Key point: Bit representation)

2. Which are the transmission modes?
   A. Simplex, half duplex, full duplex
   B. TCP, UDP, IP
   C. Bus, star, ring
   D. LLC, MAC, PHY
Answer: A. The three modes are simplex, half duplex and full duplex. (Key point: Transmission mode)

3. What does data rate define?
   A. Number of bits sent per second (bit duration)
   B. The IP address
   C. Frame size only
   D. Port numbers
Answer: A. Data rate sets how many bits per second are transmitted. (Key point: Data rate)
