## Question

Assume that your college has a perfect software package named College Management Information System (CMIS) which includes Teacher Database, Student Database, Staffs Database and Account Database and also manages tutorials, class notes through web. There is a facility of online assessment examination system that might be controlled by each subject teacher. Except this, now your College management board has passed to develop a project named college warehouse system and announced the tender notice through college web. Suppose that you are the project leader of this warehouse development system. As a project leader, (a) What are your responsibilities? (b) Divide the project into sub-system and describe the responsibilities assigned to your other partners with the help of your warehouse system architecture.

## Short answer

The project leader defines scope, plans, selects architecture, ensures data quality, coordinates team, and manages deployment. Sub-systems include requirement/design, load manager (ETL), warehouse manager (transform, aggregate), query manager, data marts (Academic, HR, Finance), front-end tools, and testing/training, each assigned to partners.

## Answer

#### Assumptions
CMIS holds teacher, student, staff, account and online-exam data in separate databases. The warehouse will give management analysis such as student performance trend, fee collection, staff workload and finance.

#### (a) Responsibilities of the project leader
- Understand management needs and define scope, goals and deliverables.
- Prepare the project plan, schedule, budget and risk plan; submit the tender proposal.
- Form the team and assign roles; coordinate between them.
- Select the architecture (bottom-up with data marts), hardware, DBMS and tools.
- Ensure data quality, security and privacy of student and staff data.
- Monitor progress and quality, manage changes, report to the board.
- Arrange testing, user training, deployment and maintenance.

#### (b) Sub-systems and responsibilities

| Sub-system | Partner responsibility |
|---|---|
| Requirement and design | Study CMIS, define fact/dimension models (Result fact: student, subject, teacher, time) |
| Load manager | Extract from the five databases, clean, load to staging |
| Warehouse manager | Transform, merge, aggregate, index, back-up, archive, metadata |
| Query manager | Route and schedule queries, user access control |
| Data marts | Academic, HR, Finance marts |
| Front end | Dashboards, OLAP, mining (pass-fail prediction, dropout analysis) |
| Testing and training | Verify data accuracy, train users |

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which is a project leader's responsibility?
   A. Only testing
   B. Defining scope, plan, budget, risk, team roles and reporting to the board
   C. Writing every ETL script
   D. Only training
Answer: B. The leader plans, coordinates and monitors. (Key point: Project leader duties)

2. What does the load manager extract from?
   A. Only the Account DB
   B. Only the web
   C. The five CMIS databases: Student, Teacher, Staff, Account, Exam
   D. Data marts
Answer: C. It extracts from all five source databases and loads to staging. (Key point: Load manager sources)

3. Which marts are proposed?
   A. Academic, HR, Finance
   B. Health, Tax, Land
