## Question

Write a short note on Data Mining in CRM.

## Short answer

Data mining in CRM supports customer segmentation, acquisition, churn prediction, cross-selling, profiling, lifetime value estimation and fraud detection. It uses customer data from sales, call centres, web and social media stored in a warehouse to build models that improve marketing, sales and service.

## Answer

**Customer Relationship Management (CRM)** is the process of managing all interactions with current and potential customers to build long-term, profitable relationships. Data mining makes CRM "intelligent" by finding knowledge in the large customer data stored in the data warehouse.

#### Data mining applications in CRM
1. **Customer segmentation**: clustering customers into groups by behaviour and value for targeted marketing.
2. **Customer acquisition**: classification and response models to select prospects likely to respond to a campaign.
3. **Customer retention and churn prediction**: classification (decision trees, neural networks) to find customers likely to leave, so action can be taken early.
4. **Cross-selling and up-selling**: association rule mining (market basket analysis) to suggest related products ("customers who bought X also bought Y").
5. **Customer profiling and lifetime value**: predict how profitable a customer will be.
6. **Fraud detection**: anomaly detection of unusual transactions.
7. **Recommendation and personalisation**, and sentiment analysis of feedback.

#### Process
Data from sales, call centre, web and social media → data warehouse → data mining models → actions in marketing, sales and service → feedback.

#### Benefits
Better customer understanding, increased loyalty and sales, lower marketing cost through targeting, and improved service.

Privacy of customer data must be protected.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which technique is used for customer segmentation?
   A. Association rules
   B. Clustering
   C. Anomaly detection
   D. Regression only
Answer: B. Customers are clustered by behaviour and value. (Key point: Segmentation)

2. Which technique supports cross-selling ('who bought X also bought Y')?
   A. Association rule mining
   B. Clustering of images
   C. Time series forecasting
   D. Link analysis
Answer: A. Market basket analysis uses association rules. (Key point: Cross-selling)

3. What is churn prediction used for?
   A. To find customers likely to leave so action can be taken early
   B. To find new prospects
   C. To detect fraud
   D. To clean customer data
Answer: A. Classification models flag customers who may leave. (Key point: Churn)

4. Which approach detects fraud in CRM data?
   A. Cross-selling
   B. Anomaly detection of unusual transactions
   C. Customer profiling
   D. Up-selling
Answer: B. Unusual transactions are found by anomaly detection. (Key point: Fraud)
