## Question

Explain with reason the areas where data mining is applicable and not applicable. Is it compulsory to have a data warehouse in an organization for data mining? Explain.

## Short answer

Data mining applies where large data hides valuable patterns (retail, banking, healthcare). It fails with small datasets, known answers, poor data, or no clear goal. A data warehouse is not compulsory but highly desirable for clean, integrated historical data.

## Answer

#### Areas where data mining is applicable
Data mining is useful where there is a large amount of data and a need to find patterns:
- **Retail and marketing**: market-basket analysis, customer segmentation, campaign response.
- **Banking and finance**: credit scoring, fraud detection, risk analysis.
- **Telecom**: churn prediction, usage analysis.
- **Healthcare and bioinformatics**: diagnosis, gene analysis, drug discovery.
- **Web and e-commerce**: recommendation, web usage mining, search.
- **Science and engineering**: weather, astronomy, fault prediction.
- **Government and security**: crime analysis, tax-evasion detection.

*Reason*: the data is large, patterns are hidden, and the discovered knowledge gives business value.

#### Areas where it is not applicable
- **Very small data sets**: patterns are not statistically reliable; simple statistics suffice.
- **When the answer is known by simple queries or rules**: SQL or reports give the answer directly.
- **Poor-quality or irrelevant data**: noisy, biased or incomplete data gives misleading results ("garbage in, garbage out").
- **No clear business goal** or no way to act on the findings.
- **Cases needing exact guarantees** (e.g. safety-critical decisions that cannot tolerate probabilistic results).
- **Privacy or legal restrictions** that prevent using the data.

#### Is a data warehouse compulsory for data mining?
No. Data mining can run on flat files, a relational database, or any data repository. But a warehouse is **highly desirable**: it provides clean, integrated, consolidated and historical data, which saves 60 to 80% of the preparation effort and improves mining quality. Without it, the mining team must do the cleaning and integration itself.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Is a data warehouse compulsory for data mining?
   A. Yes, mining cannot run without a warehouse
   B. No, mining can run on flat files or relational databases, but a warehouse is highly desirable
   C. Yes, but only for classification tasks
   D. No, and a warehouse gives no benefit to mining
Answer: B. Mining can use any data repository. A warehouse supplies clean, integrated, historical data and saves much preparation effort. (Key point: Data warehouse not compulsory)

2. Why is data mining NOT suitable when the data is noisy, biased or incomplete?
   A. Mining algorithms cannot read noisy data at all
   B. Garbage in, garbage out: the patterns found will be misleading
   C. Noisy data makes the data set too large
   D. Noisy data is always illegal to use
Answer: B. Poor data gives misleading results, so mining adds no reliable value. (Key point: Poor-quality data)

3. Why is data mining a poor choice for very small data sets?
   A. Patterns found are not statistically reliable and simple statistics are enough
   B. Small data cannot be stored in a database
   C. Mining algorithms only run on distributed systems
   D. Small data always has more noise than big data
Answer: A. Too few records give unreliable patterns, so simple statistics suffice. (Key point: Small data sets)

4. Which task is a typical applicable area of data mining?
   A. Looking up one customer's address by SQL
   B. Fraud detection and credit scoring in banking
   C. Printing a fixed monthly report
   D. Adding two numbers in a calculator
Answer: B. Mining suits large data where hidden patterns have business value, such as fraud detection and credit scoring. (Key point: Suitable application areas)
