## Question

Write a short note on Decision Support System.

## Short answer

A Decision Support System helps managers with semi-structured and unstructured problems by analyzing data, models, and knowledge. Its components are a database/data warehouse, a model base, and a user interface. It supports rather than replaces human judgement and is used for forecasting, budget planning, and stock control.

## Answer

A **Decision Support System (DSS)** is a computer-based information system that helps managers make decisions about semi-structured and unstructured problems by analysing data, models and knowledge, rather than by making decisions itself.

**Components**
- **Database / data warehouse**: stores internal and external data for analysis.
- **Model base**: statistical, forecasting, optimisation and what-if models.
- **User interface**: dialogue module for queries, reports and graphs.

**Features**
- Supports, but does not replace, human judgement.
- Interactive and flexible; supports what-if and sensitivity analysis.
- Works on summarised, historical and current data.

**Uses**: sales forecasting, budget planning, stock control, loan approval, crop planning.

A data warehouse with OLAP and data mining tools forms the data side of a modern DSS: the warehouse supplies clean integrated data, OLAP lets the manager view it from many angles, and data mining finds hidden patterns that support the decision.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the main role of a Decision Support System?
   A. To help managers decide on semi-structured and unstructured problems
   B. To store only external data
   C. To make decisions automatically instead of managers
   D. To process daily billing transactions
Answer: A. A DSS supports, but does not replace, human judgement. (Key point: Purpose of DSS)

2. Which set lists the components of a DSS?
   A. Load manager, query manager, archive
   B. Sensors, actuators, controller
   C. Database/data warehouse, model base, user interface
   D. Fact table, dimension table, metadata
Answer: C. A DSS has a data store, a model base (forecasting, what-if) and a dialogue interface. (Key point: DSS components)

3. In a modern DSS, what does data mining add?
   A. It finds hidden patterns that support the decision
   B. It stores backups
   C. It supplies clean integrated data
   D. It lets managers view data from many angles
Answer: A. The warehouse supplies data, OLAP gives views, and data mining finds hidden patterns. (Key point: DSS with warehouse and mining)
