## Question

Define the term ductility in RC design. Draw a neat sketch of a beam-column joint including ductile details.

## Short answer

Ductility is the ability to undergo large plastic deformation before failure without losing load capacity, expressed by delta_u/delta_y. In a joint, ductile details include confining hoops through the joint at 75-100 mm, beam bars anchored with Ld plus 90-degree bend, stirrups at min(d/4,8phi,100 mm) near faces, and no lap splices in the joint.

## Answer

#### Ductility
Ductility is the property of a structure or member to undergo large plastic (inelastic) deformation before failure without a significant reduction in load capacity. It is expressed by the displacement ductility ratio $\mu = \Delta_u/\Delta_y$ or the curvature ductility $\phi_u/\phi_y$.

#### Beam-column joint with ductile details
```text
          Column above (hoops s=75-100)
                  | | | |
           +------#########------+
 top bars  =====>#  joint  #<====  top bars
 anchored  |     #  hoops   #     |  continuous
 Ld from   |     #  s<=100  #     |
 inner face|=====>#         #<====|
 (10 phi)         | | | |
          Column below (hoops s=75-100)
  Beam: hoops 50 mm from face, s <= d/4, 8phi, 100
```
Ductile details shown:
- Column confining hoops (closed, $135^\circ$ hooks, $6\phi$ tail) run continuously through the joint at $\le 100$ mm (up to 150 mm if beams frame in on all four faces).
- Beam longitudinal bars at an exterior joint extend to the far face of the column, are anchored for $L_d$ measured from the inside face, and end in a $90^\circ$ bend with a standing leg of $\ge 10\phi$ turned into the joint (top bars bent down, bottom bars bent up).
- Column bars are continuous through the joint; no lap splice is made within the joint (column laps go in the central half of the column height).
- Beam stirrups start 50 mm from the joint face, with spacing $\le \min(d/4,\ 8\phi,\ 100\text{ mm})$ over $2d$; no beam lap splice within $2d$ of the joint face.
- Strong-column weak-beam proportioning, so that hinges form in the beams and the joint and columns remain essentially elastic.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Which statement best defines ductility of an RC member?
   A. Ability to carry very high load elastically
   B. Ability to deform plastically by a large amount before failure without significant loss of load capacity
   C. Ability to resist cracking under service loads
   D. Ability to remain stiff under repeated loading
   Answer: B. Ductility is large inelastic deformation beyond yield with little loss of strength. (Key point: Definition of ductility)

2. The displacement ductility ratio is expressed as:
   A. Delta_y / Delta_u
   B. Delta_u - Delta_y
   C. Delta_u / Delta_y
   D. Delta_y x Delta_u
   Answer: C. mu = ultimate displacement divided by yield displacement. (Key point: Ductility ratio)

3. What is done with the column confining hoops in a ductile beam-column joint?
   A. They are stopped at the beam soffit
   B. They run continuously through the joint at spacing <= 100 mm (up to 150 mm if beams frame on all four faces)
   C. They are replaced by straight ties at 300 mm
   D. They are provided only in the beam
   Answer: B. Continuous closely spaced hoops confine the joint core. (Key point: Hoops through the joint)

4. How are top beam bars anchored at an exterior joint?
   A. Straight, ending at the column centre line
   B. Lapped inside the joint
   C. Extended to the far face, Ld measured from the inside face, ending in a 90 degree bend with standing leg >= 10 phi
   D. Bent up at 45 degrees into the slab
   Answer: C. Ld from the inside face plus a 90 degree bend of 10 phi gives anchorage without opening the core. (Key point: Exterior joint beam bar anchorage)
