## Question

Write a short note on heterogeneity in distributed system.

## Short answer

Heterogeneity means differences in networks, hardware, operating systems, programming languages, and implementations. It is handled by middleware providing a uniform model, IDL and marshalling to common formats, mobile code, and standard protocols like TCP/IP and HTTP.

## Answer

**Heterogeneity** means variety and difference among the components of a distributed system. It applies to:

- **Networks:** Ethernet, Wi-Fi, mobile; the Internet protocols hide the differences.
- **Computer hardware:** different data representation (byte order, integer size).
- **Operating systems:** Windows, Linux, Android with different APIs for the same protocol.
- **Programming languages:** different representation of characters, arrays and structures.
- **Implementations by different developers:** they must follow common standards.

**Handling heterogeneity:** *middleware* (CORBA, Java RMI, web services) provides a uniform programming model and hides differences with an IDL and marshalling to a common format (CDR, XDR). *Mobile code* (Java applets, virtual machines, bytecode) runs the same code on any machine. Common protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP) and standards give interoperability.

Example: a Windows client in C# calls a Linux server written in Java through SOAP or REST web services.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What does heterogeneity mean in a distributed system?
   A. Variety and difference among components such as networks, hardware, OS and languages
   B. All components being identical
   C. Having only one operating system
   D. Having no network
Answer: A. Heterogeneity is the variation among components that must still work together. (Key point: Meaning)

2. How does middleware handle heterogeneity?
   A. It forces all machines to use the same hardware
   B. It gives a uniform programming model, hiding differences with an IDL and marshalling to a common format
   C. It removes the network
   D. It blocks communication between different systems
Answer: B. Middleware such as CORBA or Java RMI uses IDL and marshalling (CDR, XDR). (Key point: Middleware)

3. How does mobile code help with heterogeneity?
   A. The same bytecode runs on any machine with a virtual machine
   B. It converts byte order in hardware
   C. It replaces the operating system
   D. It encrypts messages
Answer: A. Java applets and virtual machines let identical code run on different platforms. (Key point: Mobile code)
