## Question

What are the different operating system layers? Explain the importance of each of the layers.

## Short answer

The layers are hardware (raw resources), kernel (process/thread/memory management, protection), OS services/libraries (file system, network protocols), middleware (transparency, common API), and applications. Each layer hides details of the layer below: kernel abstracts hardware, OS services offer convenient abstractions, and middleware hides OS and network differences for portable distributed programming.

## Answer

An operating system for a distributed system is organised in layers, each using the services of the layer below. Layering hides hardware detail and lets each layer be changed independently.

```text
+----------------------------------------+
Applications, services
+----------------------------------------+
Middleware (RMI, RPC, naming ...)
+----------------------------------------+
OS: kernel, libraries, servers
(process, thread, communication,
 memory management)
+----------------------------------------+
Computer and network hardware
(CPU, memory, NIC, disk)
+----------------------------------------+
```

1. **Hardware layer (platform)**: CPU, memory, disks and network interface. It executes instructions and moves data. Importance: provides raw resources on which everything runs.
2. **Kernel layer**: runs in privileged mode. It handles process and thread creation and scheduling, low level memory management (virtual memory), interrupt handling, device drivers and basic communication (IPC). Importance: protects resources, gives other layers a simple interface through system calls.
3. **OS services / library layer**: file system, network protocol stack, naming, user-level servers and libraries. Importance: gives programs convenient abstractions (files, sockets) and allows easy replacement of a service in a microkernel design.
4. **Middleware layer**: RPC, RMI, message queues, object request broker, transactions, security. Importance: hides differences of hardware, OS and network, so distributed applications are portable and see the system as one.
5. **Application layer**: user programs and distributed applications (email, web, databases). Importance: the purpose of the system; they use only the middleware API.

The lower two layers form the *platform*; the upper layers give transparency and openness for distributed programming.

## Check yourself

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. What is the kernel layer's role?
 A. Provides applications
 B. Runs in privileged mode: process/thread scheduling, virtual memory, interrupts, drivers, IPC
 C. Provides RMI
 D. Holds the CPU
 Answer: B. It protects resources and gives other layers a simple system call interface. (Key point: Kernel layer)

2. Why is the middleware layer important?
 A. It executes instructions
 B. It manages interrupts
 C. It hides differences of hardware, OS and network so applications are portable
 D. It provides the NIC
 Answer: C. Middleware gives portability and a one-system view. (Key point: Middleware layer)

3. What is the benefit of layering?
 A. It hides hardware detail and lets each layer change independently
 B. It removes the kernel
 C. It makes layers depend on those above
 D. It avoids all overhead
 Answer: A. Each layer uses services of the layer below. (Key point: Layering benefit)

4. What does the hardware layer provide?
 A. Naming
 B. Transactions
 C. Portability
 D. Raw resources like CPU, memory, disk and NIC
 Answer: D. It provides the raw resources on which everything runs. (Key point: Hardware layer)
