## Question

What are the various forms of energy storage? Describe any four in short.

## Short answer

Pumped hydro stores gravitational energy by pumping water uphill. Batteries store electrochemical energy in cells. Thermal storage holds heat in water, molten salt, or phase-change materials. Hydrogen is produced by electrolysis for long-term chemical storage.

## Answer

**Energy storage** means holding energy produced at one time for use at another time, which is needed to match supply and demand, especially with intermittent renewable sources. The forms of energy storage are:

1. **Mechanical:** pumped hydro storage, compressed air energy storage, flywheels, gravity storage.
2. **Electrochemical:** batteries (lead-acid, Li-ion), flow batteries.
3. **Electrical / electromagnetic:** capacitors, supercapacitors, superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES).
4. **Thermal:** sensible heat (hot water, rock bed), latent heat (phase change materials, ice), molten salt.
5. **Chemical:** hydrogen, synthetic fuels, biomass and biogas, fossil fuels.

#### Four forms in short
**a) Pumped hydro storage:** surplus electricity pumps water to an upper reservoir; at peak demand the water falls through turbines. Efficiency 70–85%; largest capacity and longest life.

**b) Batteries:** store electricity as chemical energy (lead-acid, Li-ion); used from phones to grid and solar systems. Efficiency 80–95%, but limited life and cost.

**c) Thermal storage:** heat stored in water, molten salt or phase change materials, used in solar thermal plants and building heating; cheap and simple.

**d) Hydrogen (chemical) storage:** electricity makes hydrogen by electrolysis, stored in tanks, then used in fuel cells or burned. Suits long-term (seasonal) storage, with low round-trip efficiency (30–40%).

Other: flywheels store rotational kinetic energy, and compressed air stores pressure energy in caverns.

The answer's key points as multiple-choice questions, with the correct option and why.

1. Why is energy storage needed, especially with renewable sources?
   A. To convert AC into DC
   B. To hold energy produced at one time for use at another time, matching supply and demand
   C. To increase the fuel's calorific value
   D. To avoid the need for any generation
Answer: B. Storage shifts energy in time, which helps with intermittent sources like solar and wind. (Key point: Purpose of storage)

2. How does pumped hydro storage work?
   A. Surplus electricity pumps water to an upper reservoir, which is released through turbines at peak demand
   B. Water is heated to store energy and later boiled
   C. Water is electrolysed into hydrogen
   D. A flywheel pumps water continuously
Answer: A. Surplus power lifts water uphill; at peak demand the falling water drives turbines. Efficiency is 70-85%. (Key point: Pumped hydro working)

3. Which is true of hydrogen (chemical) storage?
   A. High round-trip efficiency of 90-95%
   B. Suited to long-term seasonal storage but with low round-trip efficiency (30-40%)
   C. Stores energy only as sensible heat
   D. Works only for short seconds-long storage
Answer: B. Electrolysis and fuel-cell conversion lose much energy, but hydrogen can be stored for long periods. (Key point: Hydrogen storage)

4. Under which category does a supercapacitor fall?
   A. Mechanical
   B. Thermal
   C. Electrical / electromagnetic
   D. Chemical
Answer: C. Capacitors, supercapacitors and SMES are electrical/electromagnetic storage. Flywheels are mechanical. (Key point: Classification of forms)
